I would probably cry if someone did this to me, I think the Necron player in this video held himself together quite well but you could tell he was miffed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwnYrSEMLeY

Basically, at the beginning of the 2nd turn, the Necron player spent the CP on extermination protocols, but the Custodes player totally nullified it with Emperors Auspice.

Extermination Protocols (1CP): Use this Stratagem in your Shooting phase before shooting with a Destroyer Lord, a unit of Destroyers or a unit of Heavy Destroyers from your army. Re-roll failed hit and wound rolls for that unit until the end of the phase.

The Emperor’s Auspice (2CP): Use this Stratagem in any phase, when an Adeptus Custodes unit from your army is chosen as the target of an attack. Until the end of that phase, when resolving an attack against that unit your opponent cannot reroll any dice for that attack.

Is there any get out for the Necron player to be able to play this card, which is one of their more powerful cards or is it basically useless when going against Custodes?

Having thought about it, I guess he needs to split fire and have the Custodes player decide who they want to protect.

If you ever play with "that guy" remember this :
"there may be times when you are not sure exactly how to resolve a situation that has come up during play. When this happens, have a quick chat with your opponent and apply the solution that makes the most sense to both of you (or seems the most fun!), If no single solution presents itself, you and your opponent should roll off, and whoever rolls the highest gets to choose what happens." It's basically useless against Custodes. The Custodes player has to pay more CP though, so there is that balancing factor. You spend 1CP to make the opponent spend 2CP.

but isnt that one of the custardy creams well known tricks ? Watched a bat rep few weeks back where an Eldar player faffed about with Doom and Guide only to get blown out come shooting phase by the strat because MW space elf mind bullets are clearly too simple a plan

Saw a similar thing in Tabletop Titans bat rep with Craftworlds/Custodes. It's an incredible powerful strat that also nullifies doom/ various other strong strats in other armies.

A lot of bat reps I watch have benevolent players who are also incredibly competitive, and tend to agree on LOS beforehand as well as pointing out when something is disadvantageous to their opponents. This won't always be the case though and you'll see a lot of adversarial opponents too. I guess you could always ask your opponent beforehand about stratagems, but again YMMV.

Yeah it was the first real 9e rep I watched and we got pummelled. The video has a huge cathedral as terrain which, while looking good, completely obscures any view of the actual miniatures.

TT have been really pumping out the videos since 9th was announced. Some of their content is hit or miss but I'm impressed by the amount of legwork they put in.
