I know these topics have cropped up before but It would be great to get a comprehensive list on each of the major tournament's stance on modeling rules. I know the general rule is WYSIWYG but in this age of very competitive 3rd party manufacturers and 3D printing, not to mention just plain converting work, it would be nice to have each tournament's stance listed what they allow and don't. This particularly came up when I was thinking about up-scaling my old marines to Primaris proportions so I could use them as such, but would I even be allowed to use them as Primaris? What about a Chaos player using CSM with loyalist rules as long as his models abid by WYSIWYG? What percentage of a model can be 3rd party bits before its not "legal" anymore. Can I use a figure I designed and 3D printed myself? These and others questions I feel are a grey area that could use a bit of clarification. I know ultimately its up to TO's but this thread can also serve as an example of what people found was and wasn't allowed when they messaged them.

Games Workshop: Ruining Chaos Space Marines since 2007

First they raised prices on the Eldar, and I did not speak out because I did not play Eldar.

Then, they raised prices on the Orks, and I did not speak out because I did not play Orks.

Then, they raised prices on the Nids, and I did not speak out because I did not play Nids.

Then, they raised prices on the Marines, and there was nobody to speak out for me.

It'd be nice to know about scaling up models alright.

I've upscaled somewhere close to 100 old chaos marines now and I'm also starting to scale up the tanks to go along with them. They can get a decent bit bigger if you want to actually fit ten dudes in!

Will your up-scaled Marines have Bolt Rifles?

Chaos marine models are not loyalist marine models.

A probably out-of-date rule on conversions was "50% GW parts minimum". That's probably 10 years old now though.

Does a designed and 3d printed figure involve any GW parts?
This last one, the 3d printing, seems like it may encounter the most varied answers.

First question, surely, is what do you define as major tournaments?

I think the big problem is no matter what general guidelines tournaments put out they're all going to be subject to change with minimal/no notice,

and subject to 'the tournament organisers decision is final' so even if you think your 3d printed primeris-a-likes are fine the organiser can always say no (especially if they haven't seen them in person)

and they might even have said yes and then change their mind (and give you a refund on your ticket) if a big advertiser or sponsor decides they don't want unofficial minis (or unofficial minis from a competitor) on show late in the day

If I'm going to a certain tournament I read the rulespack.

If I'm not going I don't really care.

Who is really looking for such a list?

As you're in the USA, it's likely that you'll attend ITC tourneys, and the ITC has rules for this. Here's the link. Scroll down to page 7, "Administration, Hobby & Prize-Support Policies

TOs generally follow those rules, as best I experience.

I haven't seen this tried (all through 8e) but I'd bet it'd be a no go. The model is bigger, taller, etc. *Maybe*, if I were the TO, and I'd seen that you put your dudes on 32mm bases, and built up the base to give that teeny bit of height, then maybe it'd be acceptable; with Rule of Cool being a factor. If it's a half harted conversion then it might not fly.

As events are run by businesses selling GW product, this is not likely to get much traction. I know the biggies, BAO, LVO & So Cal Open wouldn't accept them.

I pulled this off once. I wrote up a silly note/story that ChoasSM agents infiltrated a Space Wolf chapter as Long Fangs (with MLs), and had to hurry back, join their regular traitor buddies, and didn't have time to change. I'm not a top table player and the kiddie pool gets rather casual. This was at 8e's beginning, but I don't think it'd be accepted again.

I checked in with the TOs, got a smirk out of them and approval. It's entirely possible that I got away with it as most players in Calif know me, know that I'll likely go 1-2 or 2-3, and don't care what I put on the table. This was ... 3 years ago. Or 4.

Things in the ITC are tighter now.

The ITC guidelines don't say anything about the topic, so they aren't particularly helpful. For example even though I have heard that 3D models (even self-printed and self-designed) aren't allowed at major ITC tournaments, nothing in that document actually touches on the subject at all. The rule is just "send us pictures and we'll let you know." Which provides no particularly useful guidance for someone looking to create a model that will meet the requirements ahead of time. It's just "send it in and hope," basically.

To that end, it does seem like it would be useful if there was a bit more concrete guidance provided on what is likely to pass muster and what isn't.

But the real answer is that the only way to be sure is to have an alternate boring vanilla GW substitute with no conversion work at all ready to go no matter what if you want to be absolutely sure you're not going to be disqualified, no matter what someone might have told you ahead of time or what the guidelines are.
