So I am finally on to my Custodes project after finishing off the Nighthaunt and have assembled and painted by first Allarus Custodians (I always start with 1 box to see if I like painting them before deciding whether to continue).

Now it's time to plan out the army but due to the way Custodes are set up so that Captains and standard bearers are part of the packs - this has left me a little confused on how best to proceed.

The biggest question I face is whether I should aim to use Captains and Standard Bearers in either the terminator or standard armour? In my head, terminator armour is better for the captain and worse for the standard bearer tactically, but financially I am better off having them in standard armour as I could then buy 3 boxes, coming out with 1 captain, 2 standard bearers and 4 squads of 3 Custodian Guard units which fills a large chunk of my army from just those 3 boxes.

I am planning to have at least 1 captain on a bike later on. I always get the infantry out of the way first

Opinions appreciated

I personally went with:
- three min squads and a banner from two guard boxes
- a min squad, banner, and two differently armed 'characters' from two terminator boxes
- a banner, min squad, and captain from a single wardens box.

Though for no particular game-related reasons - the boxes just split up that way.

I'd make all the Terminators then get a shield captain from FW, it's a pretty swanky model and saves you from cutting down one of your squads. Then make the Vexilla with regular guys since you're probably only gonna be using 3-4 man units anyways.

What I did:
2 Boxes of Allarus built me a Shield Captain and 5 Allarus (magnetized one Allarus to be a Vexilla Praetor, its very simple).
2 Boxes of Bikes built me a Shield Captain and 5 Vertus.
3 Boxes of Custodian Guard built me 3x3 Sagittarum, 1x3 Shield Custodians, a Shield Captain and another Vexilla Praetor. One guy left that I'll probably turn into another Captain with a different loadout.

As a note with the bike captain - if you leave the top fin off of one of the bikes you'll find the shield captain cape fits fairly well over the back to help the model stand out.

Yes, the regular guard squad.

Guards are out of stock and I'm waiting on delivery, so I couldn't tell. Good tip tho cause I ain't going helmetless

Thanks all, some really good points to consider. My focus to start is going to be the standard units from the box with the final purchases being those additional options. Advice for the captain on bike particularly great as by that point I should have a fair few spares laying around, one of which being the cloak so thanks
