Random musing: why are grenades in the Devastator Doctrine? They're used only up close right when charging [if used at all]. Shouldn't they be in assault doctrine?

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Because of auxiliary grenade launchers, a piece of Intercessor wargear.

If a model has an auxiliary grenade launcher, Grenade weapons that model is equipped with have a Range characteristic of 30"

Because GW wanted to keep 2 types of weapons in each Doctrine for whatever forsaken reason.
Quite frankly the way Doctrines were handled was stupid because of how Super Doctrines worked.

I actually kind of liked super doctrines in theory. In an edition where there weren't really any downsides to souping, having a reward for not adding a loyal 32 or knight to your army kind of made sense. Plus, they could be pretty fluffy. The Raven Guard super doctrine, for instance, really helps them play the way I picture them.

Of course, the new CP generation rules make it a little harder to justify granting extra buffs. You're basically rewarding people for maxing out their CP.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

In theory. In execution, such army wide bonuses were impossible to balance because of the way the Doctrines move. Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Black Templars, and White Scars were automatically behind the curve because Iron Hands and Imperial Fists would get the good bonuses. THEN cue the GW nerf hammer, and all the sudden they're worthless and Ultramarines and Raven Guard are able to operate for MUCH longer with their bonuses that are in reality just as good overall.

The best to balance it would've been you select your wanted Doctrine at the start of the game, with the Strat letting you move to any other one. The army wide part is only applicable in those particular Doctrines and costs 2-3CP.

I don't think Super Doctrines will survive the Marine codex.

Maybe, *maybe* as some kind of strategy, but… probably not.
