I've got an older box of Thousand Sons plastic and metal Marines. I can't recall why I bought them but they were meant to be loyalist Marines (I only have ~15 Chaos and don't collect them).
What markings, especially the metal cast ones, would be considered Chaos?
These are the guys.
Some of my other Marines may have been built out of other Chaos units but I've removed or hidden their Chaos marks quite happily. I just don't know enough about the Thousand Sons and the Rubrics to know which icons are Tzeentchian.

Your big issues here are the arrows on the leg greaves, and the eye on the Sorceror's chest. Also, to a lesser extent, the spikes lining the shoulder pads.
The helmets aren't technically a Chaos symbol, but the trouble is they're so unique that anyone looking at them is going to instantly associate with Thousand Sons.
Lastly, I don't see any in the picture, but if you see this, this is the symbol of Tzeentch:
With all that said - these are your models and you can technically do what you want with them! Maybe your new Chapter could be the Arrow Eyes, hailing from planet Egypto, or whatever.

True, I just really like the other-ness of them. It's a small squad and I may never field them, I just want to make cool models. But loyal ones. None of that Heresy here thank you very much.

Those guys also (I believe) have the eyes, and maybe icons, on their tabards that would need to be removed. Or at least changed in some way.

Getting there.
Can someone explain why there are 9 models? 8 Marines 1 Sorcerer. I assume 9 is the number of Change?
Still going to have to flesh the squad out a bit I think.

9 is the scared number of Tzeentch. Also there was only 8 marines in the old old chaos marines box so they just added the sorcerer to the squad as well as the metal upgrades.

Yeah I was considering removing the spikes and insignia from the backpacks but still using them (although my mini squad of actual Chaos guys don't have backpacks)
I seem to have tons of Imperial backpacks laying around so I can switch them out if I decide.
I'm in need of a handful of Imperial legs though. I have tons of extra Chaos ones for some reason I can't figure out. The ones with this kit and others too.

TBH I wouldn't worry much about "spikes"/"teeth" on the trim (shoulderpads, etc). Sure, Chaos Marines have them, but they can easily be attributed to the Chapter's affectation. An occasional arrow is OK too in my opinion, as long as it isn't a part of the eight-pointed star. The overall style of backpacks is OK too in my opinion, but they usually have a bunch of chaos symbols on them so cleaning them up might not be worth it.
I would get rid of the Tzeentch symbols, eyes of Horus and actual pointy-bit spikes. The sorcerer is a bit over the top, what with the robe that looks like it's made from human skin.

I've been thinking about painting Tsons in 30K in blue even though its not canon; because there's already too much red in my cabinet.
BUT: I've seen some pretty baller metallic red tuts using a red clear over metallics that you could consider.
