Sorry for this kind of post. I know dakka and other sites can be dumping grounds for them but….

I have an overwhelming urge to paint Orks. If I were to start playing again what are the go too units for a newb.

Context. The last time I was playing 40k was 2nd edition. I dipped my toe back in during 7th but that is it. I have 50 mintic orks on the way for the boyz. I understand they are a true 25 scale and will look a little smaller.

Can anyone play FW now?

Is that a reliable army builder yet?

Thanks guys.

Orks are in a bit of a bad place right now. They are a Xenos faction (and thus automatically shafted) and they just got screwed over royally with the nerf to grots.

Try battlescribe for an army builder. It's content is built and reviewed by a community, any errors are usually quickly corrected. And it's free if you don't mind the ads.

Regarding forgeworld, that depends entirely on where you play. Forgeworld models are no longer as foreign as they were in previous editions, but it also depends on the group/tournament you want to play with.

Stop me if I'm wrong, but if the OP has got their first 50 boyz on the way since last playing in 2nd ed, I think tournament viability can be pushed down the list, just under "Fun to paint", "Easy to play" and "A good laugh" All of which I think orks are good at
Welcome back. I am also an old school 2nd ed'er (Must remember to pack the original Ghaz model one day with the new one, just to see the look on my opponents face when I swear down that it's official!)
If you are just picking it up again, just go for what is cool. The game is still crazy expensive, so your best best is to make a legal force with models that you will enjoy painting.
Later on you can mortgage your home to afford the 6 smasha gunz that every netlist says you have to have (or whatever fotm is).
Rule of cool roolz.

P.S. Much as I love my orks. Don't go all in until you;ve played against a few other armies. There is some cool stuff out there and once you see the minis, your allegiances may... shift

Any true Ork would know that you don't need to spend more than a few teef to make a Smasha Gun. Or lots of Smasha Gunz. Or any of the other Gunz.
Go to your local WalMart.
Buy some toy with alot of wheels.
Tear it apart.
Make some sort of chassis.
Add a few wheels.
Find some tubes/mechy looking bitz/whatever you think a ____Gun should look like.
Bind it all together with rivits/boltz/banding/welds/glue.
Paint your favorite sigils on it.
Point at enemy & FIRE! (trust me, it'll work. If it doesn't it's because you're not Ork enough)

See, this isn't the Imperium. Each gun? It's a unique piece of Orky art & creativity, made from whatever's handy.

Have a look here for a rough overview of how the latest edition of Warhammer shakes up the meta for Orks:
https://www.goonhammer.com/9th-edition-faction-focus-orks/

There are some sample lists as well. Should give you an idea of what units you might want to include.

According to the article Orks are decent.

Custom40k Homebrew - Alternate activation, huge customisation, support for all models from 3rd to 10th edition

Designer's Note: Hardened Veterans can be represented by any Imperial Guard models, but we've really included them to allow players to practise their skills at making a really unique and individual unit. Because of this we won't be making models to represent many of the options allowed to a Veteran squad - it's up to you to convert the models. (Imperial Guard, 3rd Edition)

They're doing so poorly they've been piloted to first place in two GTs.

If Mika Häkkinen beat me in a race around Silverstone using a Ford Fiesta while I had a Mustang, does that make the Fiesta a faster car?

Stupid post tbh my friend.

It shows that Orks can be competitive but no, they aren't as strong as Marines. Stop whining when armies who are actually abysmal right now like GSC exist my man.

As long as they have the proper base, no one should give you any trouble. Note that more recently bought boyz have larger bases, but there is no need to rebase your orks outside of certain tournament circuits.

Beyond that, orks can currently build a decent and rather fun vehicle list, or go for the traditional green tide. What kind of army are you looking for?

Can anyone play FW now?

Yes, but I would suggest not investing heavily into that. GW has been culling FW options for a while now, and it's not impossible that FW 40k might eventually disappear.

Is that a reliable army builder yet?

Here you can find the most reliable one currently available: https://battlescribe.net/

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.
