I've been thinking about starting a conversion project to make a batch of chaos cultists after my other WIPs are wrapped up, and would appreciate some input/suggestions.
The idea is that they're nasty little gribblies that are bred for dirty manual labour (Iron Warriors are supposed to be bad guys, what can I say), so they'll be mostly bare skin and rags, donned with gas masks, more dirty rags, guns, AdMech bionic bits etc. to make them look suitably gross and sci-fi. Body-wise, I want something hunched/malformed/malnourished-looking to give them that good gribbly vibe, which is why I'm considering crypt ghouls.

Bonuses:
1) Easy to get
2) 20 in a box, big thumbs up

Problems:
1) They have a load of junk on their backs - this isn't too bad since it can rather easily be removed and then covered with some spare bits/handy greenstuff work, but if I can save myself the work then that's a bonus
2) More importantly, they suffer from old sculpt syndrome. The hands/feet/legs are out of proportion and goofy looking. Solving this requires a bit more work than the junk on their backs, especially since fitting some asymmetrically with bionic limbs will only exaggerate how out of proportion parts of the original sculpts are.

While I can ultimately deal with these things if I have to, I want to ask: does anyone have ideas for alternative models that might work while saving me some trouble?

I did this exact thing with Crypt Ghouls a while ago!

Spoiler:

I think the scuplts actually hold up really nicely; the only parts that are glaringly out of proportion are the hands, which I didn't use. Some torsos have more 'junk' on them than others, and I spent a lot of time cleaning all the junk of and sculpting rags etc. to cover the spots where they were. You definitely don't have to do that though; the junk on their backs can look good too.

Extra bits I used were nearly all from GS Cults Neophytes; great source of guns/ arms and heads with goggles and masks.

GW LoTR Goblins are an alternative for a similar-ish vibe, very cheap but quite small minis: https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Goblin-Warriors-2018

Oh sweet, those look ace! Really nice greenstuff work, too.
Without the hands the proportion issue is much less noticeable for sure, and I suppose if I felt the need I could always make the feet a little smaller with a craft knife and some greenstuff. Hmmm...

I hadn't even considered the LoTR range before, but those little guys look gross in a good way! You're right though, they do look quite small - some of them look smaller than an autogun so they probably aren't suitable size-wise for use with additional 40k bits.

Thanks for the help!
