Been a while since I’ve posed on Dakkadakka, good to be back. Anyways here’s a Raven Guard Primaris Ancient I recently finished up, looking for critique to improve my painting. Thanks in advance!

The white part looks nice and smooth (and that can be tough to do). My only critique would be the metal on the bolter looks kind of rough.

I can't tell if it's bad texturing from the primer or paint, or maybe it just needs an ink wash.

I prefer to buy from miniature manufacturers that *don't* support the overthrow of democracy.

I appreciate the feedback. Totally agree with you on the white, it’s definitely tough to get right. I’m still trying to work out effective highlights for white. I did edge highlight the white areas, but it can be difficult to see. I’m pretty sure it’s because my base color and highlight are too close to each other. May have to start with a different color white for the base coat next time.

Fair enough on the bolter, I think it’s a paint on primer botch. I never really managed to get it to work in the past regardless of how much I thinned it, it would still dry thick and goopy in certain areas and clog detail. Maybe I had a bad batch, who knows? I eventually gave in and bought an airbrush since it’s humid year round where I live and rattle cans were hit and miss. It’s definitely much easier for me to prime now. Hmm, I might be able to fix it with a few washes/inks, like you suggested, and cleaning up some of the highlights.

The trick with white is either to use two tones of shade, or use a slightly-off-white for the main colour so you can save absolute-brightest white for the highlight. That's really tricky to see properly while you're actually painting it, though.
Nice work overall! I'll agree that the metal looks a bit rough - looks like the paint might have gone on a little thick?

Took a bit of scraping, it turned out to be some thick primer that settled, but I think I’ve mostly salvaged the bolter. Anyways, here’s my progress.

That does indeed look much better. Well done for going back and fixing! I know I probably wouldn't have made the effort.
