How do?

Clocked this on the BBC. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-53846634

No word on who the character is, but reports it’s a female superhero. Given how much of the stable Marvel proper have clawed back, smart money seems to be on Spider Woman, possibly the Jessica Drew incarnation.

Various tweets embedded in the report, but may just be happenstance and not necessarily ‘nod and a wink’ teasers.

I don't think Sony has the rights to spider woman. shes not actually a spiderman related property despite the name.

Seems it’s another MCU tie in, as opposed to their own Venomverse.

Also, currently unconfirmed it’s a female character.

So long as it features interesting characters and a decent story I'll watch it.

Yeah, providing the writing and acting are on point it should easily work and be a success. There's plenty of interesting, well played female characters already within the MCU, they do it fairly easily.

Shame about captain marvel making such a film have to jump through hoops though, Brie Larson was poor casting in the sense she is just an underwhelming actress, underwhelming being a key word as she always seems underwhelmed in all movies I've seen her in.

This isn't anything related to the typical backlash she receives mind, I'm old and ugly enough to not get offended by women wanting equality, I just think she was a poor choice and she ruined the captain marvel film, which has some flaws but is a pretty decent entry into the MCU storywise etc...

It would be interesting to see what she comes under if she doesn't come under the spiderverse... Spider-Gwen comes under Sony (or you'd presume) after into the spider-verse, and she's a version of spider-woman, or could be argued is anyway...

Anything has to be a step up from Brie looking mildy put out across time and space in her usual beige curtains acting style.

Fingers crossed its someone new with little or no prior MCU connection

Really hope its not another incarnation of spider-humin. The saturation is worse than batman, and as far as Im concerned they keep failing... The 90's cartoon was the only spider man that needs to exist on any screen

If it is true I guess Sony is juts trashing the IP before handing it over back to disney.
As otherwise I don't understand why they hand over High profile IP to someone who has never directed anything substantial int heir life as a first major project. But hey ho...

I believe sony owns the xmen and spidey Ip right?
I know there some weird thing they got going on with marvel concerning those IP.

Really hope they go with some unique Marvel character for this.

Nope. Fox had the X-stuff rights. Since they sold 20th Century Fox to Disney (who has kept them vaguely intact as '20th Century Studios,' at least so far), Marvel has them (and Fantastic Four).
Which is why the New Mutants are finally staggering out into Covid-ridden movie theatres.

Spiderman (and venom) are the major ones outside the Disney stable, though Universal has some non-exclusive claims on Hulk, Namor, and She-Hulk.

There's also news about a Kraven the Hunter film, which is a shame for two reasons:

1. Sony doesn't need to make movies about individual Spidey villains just to pad out the lincense.

2. It'd be way cooler to have him in the next Spider-Man MCU film, hunting the "murderous fugitive terrorist" Spider-Man.

Wasn’t there discussion of a Black Cat film in the schedule somewhere? It’s a Spidey IP and a female character. Maybe this is the one that’s coming up?

Black Cat to me seems pretty underwhelming to base a movie around, but... who knows.

Spider-Woman seems a lot more compelling. If they use the detective part of her background, they basically can Venn diagram the best parts of Jessica Jones and Spidey, and I think they're golden.

Obviously, the one they really should make would be Spider-Gwen, but I have no idea what the rights situation is around her.

Olivia Wilde for director is a maybe risky choice. I like her just fine as an actress, but she's really only directed a single full-length movie, right? Booksmart was pretty good for sure - so she has that going for her - but I have to imagine there are some growing pains between making a $6 million dollar movie and making a $100 million movie. I just looked up every single MCU and DCEU director, and I think she would be tied with Cathy Yan for the least experienced director so far.

With the MCU, you have the institutional stuff to lean on; but the Sony universe doesn't have pretty much any support - either in terms of developed shared universe already established (since they have only like, Venom) or studio cred (since the last 2 Sony Spider-man movies sucked) - one really bad movie at this early juncture could, I think, potentially sink the fledging non-collaborative Sony Spiderverse and relegate them to just licensing out to Marvel, or doing collabs like they did with Into the Spider-Verse. And both of those options are better than the current MCU fragmentation, so honestly, I think we're winners either way.

On the other other (other?) hand, she has exec produced a bunch.

Taika Waititi had not done anything with a budget anything like Ragnarok prior to directing that either, afaik?

I dont think the issue is budget and director here. Its sony interfereing in any spiderman property they control.

Oliva making a movie controlled 100% by sony isnt going to be like booksmart because of the oversite and for sure changes they will make her do.

Well, they seem to have learnt their lesson with the last two Spidey movies. I guess that’s the benefit of Disney having laid so much groundwork that it’s kind of a no brainier.

Did they? Venom was an entirely bland nothing of a movie because of studio interference. It was a Pg 13 mess with a 3rd act where indistinguishable blobs of cgi did indistinguishable blobs of cgi stuff to each other exactly like a DC movie where the 3rd act is just smoke and lightning against a dead green screen back drop.

While some good moments were in the movie, the post credit seen with the most laughable wig I have ever seen on Woody Harrleson sums up the movie pretty well. It's famous actors put on screen with the lowest common denominators for action and story to nulify anything interesting about the characters and strip any vision the director might have from the final work because they don't want anyone drawing outside the lines. Cap it off with the fact that they cast a man (who is a great actor whos work I love but is incredibly miscast for the part) who is about to turn 60 as Cassidy/Carnage and you can be damn sure that the sequel will have very little Woody in it at all. Oh he will do some voice acting. for the "stunt double" they might use in the ping pong ball suit if they don't just decide to CGI carnage whole sale is who we are going to be watching on screen.

Sony hasn't learned gak. Venoms success tells them to take more control.

If it's a Sony property then it likely won't be.

Shame. I like Spider-Woman. Having her in the MCU would be fun.

Double shame that Sony has the rights to her, given that she has nothing to do with Spider-Man and really only exists so that DC couldn't take the name (much like Marvel scooped up Wonder Man after Wonder Woman was a hit).

I understand what you're saying but calling what some of these creeps do 'silliness' is really softballing it. They've swatted female game designers and directors, threatened to rape and murder them, stalked them, etc. That's not silliness, that's pretty much evil.

This thread veered into some very imaginary/hypothetical areas, all of which have virtually nothing to do with Olivia Wilde directing a Spider-Woman movie.

You can almost make a softball team of Spider Women/Girls

Off the top of my head:
Jessica Drew brunette Spider Woman
Wasshername blonde Spider Woman
May Parker, daughter of Peter, Spider Girl
Wasshername, John Byrne's brown-haired Spider Woman
Archane or something, Hispanic Spider Woman
Silk, Korean Spider Woman
Spider Gwen

If I were Sony I'd want a Spider Woman/Girl name and would guess that they can claim rights to at least one of the seven.

Jessica Drew was the brunette - also impersonated by a Skrull Queen for a long period of time.

Julia Carpenter was the blonde - has also operated as Arachne and Madame Web.

Mattie Franklin would be John Byrne's Spider-Woman - though she's currently dead.

Mayday Parker was the MC2 Spider-Girl, the daughter of Peter and MJ.

Anya Corazon is the Hispanic Spider-Girl, having originally used Araña as a codename.

Silk is Cindy Moon, a Korean-American heroine with Spider powers.

Spider-Gwen/Ghost-Spider is an alternate Gwen Stacy.

Jessica Drews origins also have her spend her early career as a brainwashed Hydra agent before breaking free of their control and defecting to shield.

Again, I am unsure how Sony has any rights to the character. She is wholly unconnected to Spiderman.
