My first ever minis were given to me by my uncle in...1994? IIRC. It was a handful of Space Crusade minis with a fairly random selection of gear. I painted them with enamels as one does when they are starting out :p

They were also painted really really badly. I'm busy correcting that.

The weapon options for the squads were, IIRC the Sergeant could carry a CCW+BP or a Heavy Bolter. I was given one of each. I'm now busy building my SC's into Devastators because I love the old school heavy weapons they have, which means my Sergeant can now get CCW+BP. HOWEVER. I only have one Space Crusade CCW+BP and that is staying on my "Blood Angel" as my dad painted it and he passed away 10 years ago. I'm not redoing that mini.

Which means I need to go to my Bitz Box to equip my Sergeant. So I've got the whole gamut of weapons I can use. Now I'm generally going for Rule of Cool over what's actually the best loadout for a Sergent. Some options are 2nd Edition Power Axes, chainswords, bolt pistols, combi bolters and plasma pistol. Including what looks like a DW or GK or MasterCrafted plasma pistol.

What's a good idea. Should I go "classic", should I go what's actually useful?

So far the weapons are just tacked on and can be removed but this is a proof of concept:

Personally what I do is go for what looks right to my eyes. When building minis the last thing to enter my mind is 'are these the correct weapons'? Trust your instinct and your eyes.

Thanks. I'm going to test fit the Master Crafted plasma pistol and the chainsword. As much as I'd like to recreate the look of the SC guy, why ? I already have one like that and the 2nd Ed power axe is dated AF.
