So since 8th edition started i was struggling to find something that i find cool to play since GW ruined orks for me when all the fun rules of orks were taken out like the old shokk attak gun.

Anyways i then liked the change the old tactical space marines were getting cheaper points wise and i started my own successor chapter lions of ultramar.
even bought lion shoulder pats. i was playing 100 marines on 2k points and it felt amazing.
then GW started to worsen it every couple months by further reducing the cost of tactical marines and introducing the space marine bolter buff.
i suddenly had the strongest army in my group and it was so easy to play and win with that it wasnt even fun to play anymore.
no troop choices of xenos armies were even a match for my 6 SM Troops.

anyways now tactical marines have 2wounds and are getting more expensive points wise. and to make the long story shorter i hate the changes that are made for SM's for now.

so i love to move huge armies and i want to simulate an actual war game. i dont like those 7 model(not units) lists some people play in 40k

now i thought to myself okay i guess i start an imperial guard army since i always loved them anyways next to orcs. they are more strategic than orcs have the world war 1 style and im getting punished real hard for bad decision making.

then i got hooked on the idea of collecting inquisition with imperial guard only to realize that Inquisition doesnt really fit (in my opinion) with cadia dudes.
i thought of multiple ways to convert my own inquisitor or my own imperial guard faction but realized that this wont be fun to do since i got so little options and the inquisition gets overlooked most of the time in every edition from what ive noticed so far. I thought to myself then hmmm maybe i Build my own Rogue Trader and proxy his Xenos Buddies as Inquisition and Acolytes but they would be more fitting with Cadian IMperial Guard. But Converting a cool rogue Trader turned out to be much more difficult than an Inquisitor so that idea died aswell. and i also dont like Cadia as much as other Imperial Guard Factions.

Now it gets really dark and this where i became a sad panda.
i now decided to just collect Death Korps of Krieg since theyre the fanciest soldiers in 40k anyways and are still strategic enough to get my joy playing them against my player group. AND since i rarely visit Forge World i now realized that most of the DKoK units arent even on the website anymore.

i know my taste is very niche in terms of style and im not easily satisfied but it doesnt change the fact that im now officially a sad panda. we plan to make our own campaign and i got nothing . this is my sad panda story i had to get out somewhere.

feel free to share yours. Also maybe you guys help me with a decision

What do you mean its too hard to convert an Inquisitor to fit a Cadia army? Do you mean scale-wise?

i have a problem with the 2 looks combined.

inquisition has this victorian radical gothic style.
Cadia is more like the Organized Civilised Military Style.

these 2 dont match well together in my opinion. i know inquisition nowadays orders others to help achieve their goals and they themself act more like an Agent.
But i dont like those 2 combined.

My original idea was to convert a Death Korp Marshall with a Heavy Flamer (to use incinerator in the profile) An upgraded Imperial Sabre Power sword with Runes on it so that it counts as a Psychik weapon. And then i wouldve tried To get A head with an Victorian Hat on it somewhere and use it instead of the Gas Mask helmet (i know its a crime to use other heads on DKoK).
And then i wanted to use some demi Demon acolytes and other radical lookind dudes and dudettes but that wouldnt fit at all with the cadian army.

they would gak their pants if theyve seen the inquisitor and probably shot him on accident thinking he was a heretic hehe.

yeah and steel legion wouldve been cool but as far as a i know they arent possible to collect anymore. since gak is missing in their shop.

the original idea was actually.
to play a purist with the flamer (inquisitor) no demons then.
some Imperial Guard.
A little bit of Battle Sisters.
And a little bit of Blacktemplers.

to represent everything the Imperium has to offer except psykers.

But Cadia doesnt match the Gothic theme of such an Army.

tbh I'd save some $ and collect an army of Victoria Miniatures guard or something. Some kind of cool third party mini sculpts.

"I can't believe all these tryhard WAACs out there just care about winning all the time when it's supposed to be a game for fun!!!!!!! Also here's my 27 page essay on why marines are OP and Orkz should get a bunch of OP rules so I can win more games

Could always grab a 3D resin printer; people do make STL files for gas-masky WWI soldiers. It'll require learning a few skills, but you could do it.

So you've never heard of EBay?
It's pretty easy. Go there, type Steel Legion into the search bar, start shopping.

Having accumulated a fair sized IG army, played them since the original Eye of Terror campaign back in 2003-ish, I would probably suggest 3rd party models, if your group is on board.

Also, it’s not a very interesting army, model wise. You have Infantry squads, Scions, Russ chassis and Chimera chassis.

Yes, there are also Sentinels, and Ogryn that you *might* find use for. But for practical purposes, there are 4 models that you’ll use, armed with different weapons. 6, if you choose Sentinels and Ogryns.

There are other options, particularly if you branch out to FW (only thing I’ve ever bought from them was a Vendetta upgrade kit for my Valkyrie).

Other than that, the odd character models are the only thing to break up some otherwise seriously monotonous modelling options. I don’t regret it. I still love my Guard, but there hasn’t been anything new in a long time. Since Guardsmen are going to die by literal handfuls, I really wish I’d spent less cash on them, and you need a LOT for their combined arms to work properly. If your gaming group / store is cool with 3rd party minis, I’d strongly suggest it.

I agree strongly with greatbigtree.

It's been my opinion for awhile now that 3rd party models MAKE the guard. My latest force right now uses ZERO GW models in it, and its been a real blast to put together, customize, and play.

Hey, I have three other 40k armies with GW models, and variety is the spice of life you know? My local group has at least two other people ALSO with entirely 3rd party guard armies.

At this point it just makes sense.

Cool story. eBay, Gumtree, FB marketplace and third-party alternative models might be worth a look.

never really looked for third party models for the Imperial Guard tbh.

Not a big fan of used models even though i might give it a try.

the fact that Imperial Guard itself just looks like a regular military unit is exactly why i kind of like the Imperial Guard.
theres a certain beauty about defeating all those killer machines with just regular Humans.

theres 2 problems about playing Imperial Guard the way i want though.
i wanted less artillery and more of a strategic force with combined attacks. lets say dropping veterans with a valkyrie next to my sentinels and chimeras transporting special weapon squads.

problem of 8th and 9th edition is though that the Bolter Beta rule for space marines destroys all strategic movement in the game for other factions.
its pointless to play troops with Orks Eldar Dark Eldar and Imperial Guard because of the Fire power space marines have now.
theres only one strategy at the moment against the bolter rain of death that is long range firepower but that is boring as fck. its just throwing dices.

so you are kinda forced to play transporters. but they are expensive and raise the cost of your infantry to the lvl of regular space marines. and nothing comes close to being as useful as a space marine so its a waste of points really.

not a super competive player nor is my group. but we dont play like fools aswell so thats a major problem.
feel like GW has dropped the ball with 8th and 9th edition.

If you want a combined arms aproach, you anayways would've fielded chimeras though?

So i don't quite get the complaint.

Gotta agree, at their core; in the world of 31 flavours, IG are the bucket of water you use to wash out the ice cream scoop without 3rd party options.

@ MDK:

Valkyries are a trap, unfortunately. For the price of a Valk and a Veteran Squad, how many Scions could you drop down, without risk of being shot from the sky? Probably 3 times As many bodies on the ground.

Chimeras are also traps, in my opinion. You could suffer 3 times as many losses and still have board presence. Also, guys inside can’t shoot so you double-lose with transports.

You can advance. Dudes shielding Russes is bread and butter for Guard. Dudes shielding artillery is bread and butter for Guard. Scions dropping into the backfield is bread and butter for Guard. That’s what the army does. Nothing fancy. Nothing fast. It is attrition. Turn over turn, Guard loses less valuable models than the opponent. Guard’s more valuable (Killy) models survive to keep destroying the enemy units. Guard loses buckets of grunts while the enemy force loses a couple handfuls... which is still in Guard’s favour. That’s just kind of how the army operates.

It’s like piece-trading in chess. The idea is to force your opponent into making bad trades. Opponent takes Pawn, I take knight, opponent takes bishop, I take Queen. That’s the overall strategy for Guard, more so than other factions.
