Chapter Approved 2020 has no points for the bonesinger.

The latest publication that does, Chapter Approved 2019, lists them as Elites at 55 points.

The week before Chapter Approved 2019 came out, the Legends PDF was released, marking Bonesingers as HQ on their datasheet but putting them in the points-cost section for Elites and costing them 70 points.

I don't know whether to go with the latest publication (which explicitly says it does not include any Legended models) or the Legend publication (which is self-contradictory). Also, in regards to Legend, I don't know if they are intended to be HQ or Elites.

It seems, sadly, that if the unit is not in the MFM or a Legends PDF, it is no longer valid for Matched play and is relegated to Narrative play.

From the MFM 2020 Preamble:
The points values listed in this book replace any published previously, and should be used in your matched play games (or any of your games that are using points values). As with the previous edition of the Munitorum Field Manual, this book contains the points values for every single model and item of wargear that, at the time of printing, are supported for matched play games, eliminating the need to flip back and forth between two or more books.
Emphasis mine. As it contains everything that is "supported for matched play games", this implies that anything not there is not supported for matched play games. It could be argued that Legends aren't "supported" for Matched play, but they have points values so can be used in Matched play.

Since the Bonesinger is listed in Legends, it is usable in matched play. While the Bonesinger's points are listed under the Elites section, it's datasheet states it has the HQ Battlefield role, and the Datasheet is what determines the actual rules of the unit.

Of course, as I am repeatedly told, this is YMDC, where the rules are made up and the points don't matter, and I don't know why I need to make this clear every time I post, lest some people take umbrage with it, but you're free to use whatever House Rules you and your opponent agree to, including the use of MFM 2019 points values where none exist in MFM 2020.

It's in the Legends PDF. Which is legal for Matched Play Games according to its own preamble.

Should I use the entry there instead of the more recently published one? If so, should I use the Datasheet indicator of HQ, or the Army List Points indicator of Elite?

The "Latest Publication" would be the Legends PDF, as MFM 2019 is entirely invalidated by MFM 2020. You should use objectively use the Legends Points cost and the HQ Battlefield role, in my opinion.

Makes sense to me; you went with what the battlefield role is on the datasheet and not what it is in the points section. Is that just opinion or is there a reason to believe that is the case?

I am going to operate by consensus and that seems like a reasonable one.

Mainly because it's the Datasheet that sets the rules and characteristics of the unit, not the points section. Also GW have a track record of screwing up point section labelling (e.g. Space Wolves).

Gotcha. Will do what my group consensus is locally but will expect it to be HQ abroad. It's worth mentioning that the only other iteration of the datasheet was an elite as well, and marked it so on the army list entry (where it's been elite the entire time). I think my group thinks it's an elite and the datasheet symbol is an aberration, but I'm happy to play however. Only problem occurs if I come to a game with a prewritten list and my opponent thinks it's a 4th HQ or something.
