Hiding behind terrain

I am thinking of starting Nighthaunt as my first AoS army having started grabbing some from mortal realms mags.
Im trying to figure out what rulebooks are actually needed to get access to nighthaunts full rules.

It seems like I would need these to cover any stuff not covered by the free warscrolls or free rules:
-Core Book
-Nighthaunt Battletome
-Generals Handbook 2020
-Malign Sorcery
-Forbidden Powers (legion of grief nighthaunts expansion?)

Im actually quite put off by the idea of dropping over $300 on rules so likely taking my ghosts to a different game system anyway but felt I should still make a thread to ask.

Battletome

Why would you need Malign Sorcery? Most of it is no longer allowed in Matched Play.

Forbidden Power is a sub-allegiance and therefore you would only need it if you want to play this specific allegiance.

Endless spells are pretty darn useful

Malign Sorcery and Forbidden Powers sets are not just rules but also Endless Spell models for all factions (FP also includes a terrain feature for any faction).

You also don't want the core rule book either. For rules only its not that good. Sure they are in there, but there's a huge chunk of lore and art that you just don't need for gaming.

What you want is the Gaming Book
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Age-Of-Sigmar-Gaming-Book-EN-2019

Which also includes the Malign Sorcery rules and some of the FAQ/Errarta updates to the core rules.

It's a much smaller more practical book for gaming with which focuses purely on the rules alone.

Add to that the Generals Handbook and the Forbidden Powers IF you want to use those endless spells. Same for Malign Sorcery. Both those sets are worth their costs for the models if you want the models.

So
Game Book
Battletome
Generals Handbook2020 - though note you can get the points changes for free off the Warscroll builder on the GW website.

Optional extras for endless spell models - noting that if there is just 1 spell you want you might convert/find it second hand on ebay etc..
Malign Sorcery
Forbidden Powers

I'm not sure why you would suggest the Gaming Book. It has the GHB 2019 rules which are invalidated by the 2020 version and the Malign Sorcery rules, which are also invalidated in Matched Play.
Free PDF + GHB 2020 until an updated Gaming Book comes out.

If you want Endless Spells, get the MS box, sure. But not really needed to start playing Nighthaunt. Not sure which spell you would use with them anyway.

Because the GHB doesn't have the full game rules; its an addendum to them. So you want the Gaming Book for all the core general references its got. Then the GHB 2020 to add to it.

I agree the free PDF is also an option, but you have to print that off yourself to game with and many people prefer a book over a printout.

Who & where your Matched Play occurs with is also a consideration.
For ex, within my circle? We weren't done using our MS sets. Won't be for a looong time as we consider those rules to be adding to our fun. So our matched play games still include those rules.
