Subject: 3D printed - Necron terrain from Dawn of War
I found some interesting Necron STL's on Etsy, of all places, for $3 - so, I wound up with 3 interesting pieces of Necron Terrain for $6 in plans.
If I could do it over again, I might be a little more careful with sanding, priming with hi-fill primer, and sanding again. I got rid of most of - but not all - of the layer lines.
I don't have any work in progress pics of the actual Necron parts because they are very simple 1 piece prints with basic paint jobs.
Anyway, here is the build:
Spoiler:
3D printed base with some wire mesh for support:
Slathered on some plaster of paris:
Building up the rocky substrate with some corkboard I picked apart:
Blending it in with some more plaster of paris:
Used some German terrain stuff. I think it's plaster of paris mixed with vermiculite or something? It makes for a nice, rocky texture.
Added some more bits of cork to the existing cork so it didn't look so flat on top. Yeah, I fixed that one spot on the left that is messed up.
Added some sand:
And the finished terrain:
Spoiler:
Slightly blurry Space Marine for scale:
What I was going for here was rocky plates that were shattered by the Necron structures pushing into them as they arose from the earth. Was I successful? ... No, not really. But I think they came out pretty alright. I don't think the final effect is amazing per se, but it's kinda neat, and I banged it out from beginning to end in less than 2 weeks, which is phenomenally fast for me.
Special shout out to the guys that gave me advice in P&M, like Flinty, Thatsummercampcrush, etc.

Maybe hit the outer edges of the base with a lighter drybrush so it more closely matches the color of the surrounding tabletop? That might help sell the look that the base is part of the same earth and the pillar is breaking out of the wider surface.
That's a really good idea, thanks!
The more I look at it, the less I like how the cork looks. I think it looks amazing in small bits but at that scale... I think it just looks kinda off. I really wish I had used slate now.
Ah well, there will be many more pieces of terrain in the future.
