So getting back into the game since I'm starting up a 40k club at the school I work at. Popped to the local GW to buy the starter set for the school.
Since I'm in Shanghai and all my stuff is in the UK I've decided to collect a new army myself too. Met a kindred spirit in the shop who recommended Scions and so I bought 2 Scions patrol boxed sets. I want to have a very mild force to play against the students since we will be building up the armies alongside each other, but want a decent army for when I play in the shop or at a gaming club.
Been looking over the Scions, absolutely loving the doctrine and warlord trait for Lambdan Lions (ridiculous name btw). Also like the Strategem that gives another Tempestor Prime a warlord trait so that you can have 2. Killing Zone strat also looks amazing for 1CP. The fact that they are now 7pts each is amazing. As is the reduction is points to AM weapons such as MLs, LCs, PCs etc.
Since it's not as easy to get models that aren't boxed sets out here I've been looking towards building an army using the boxed sets as pretty much the whole thing.
If I buy 4xScions Patrol boxed set (so 2 more) 3xGuard Patrol boxed set and 1x Guard Infantry squad, I can make the following (little bit cheesing with the Catachan detachment):

Scions Battalion (Lambdan Lions - all units get a further -1ap to all weapons):
Tempestor Prime
Rod, Keys to the Armoury WL trait, Kurov's Aquila

Tempestor Prime
Rod, Grand Strategist WL trait (costs 1cp should make more than that back), Laurels of Command

10 Scions
4 Plasma guns, 1 plasma pistol

10 Scions
4 Plasma guns, 1 plasma pistol

10 Scions
4 Melta guns, 1 plasma pistol

8 Scions
2 Melta guns, 1 plasma pistol

Taurox Prime (I can't wait to see 4 of these unload with an additional -1ap to all weapons)
Gattling Cannon, storm bolter, 2 hotshot vollyguns

Taurox Prime
Gattling Cannon, storm bolter, 2 hotshot vollyguns

Taurox Prime
Gattling Cannon, storm bolter, 2 hotshot vollyguns

Taurox Prime
Gattling Cannon, storm bolter, 2 hotshot vollyguns

Cadian Battalion:
Pask
Battlecannon (unfortunately no punisher or executioner in that kit), 2 plasma cannons, lascannon, storm bolter

Lord Commisar
Plasma pistol

Infantry squad
Missile Launcher

Infantry squad
Missile Launcher

Infantry squad
Missile Launcher

Special weapons squad
3 flamers

Veteran squad
3 Grenade Launchers, Missile Launcher

Catchan Vanguard
Tank Commander
Battle Cannon, 2 Plasma Cannons, Lascannon, storm bolter

Tank Commander
Battle Cannon, 2 Plasma Cannons, Lascannon, storm bolter

Commisar
Plasma pistol

Commisar
Plasma pistol

Commisar
Plasma pistol

1996pts
Using every model in the boxes.

I've seen the new way command points are going to be used in 9th, and I realise that I want less not more detachments, if the Vanguard detachment costs too many CPs then I'll rework the list to get rid of all the commisars and make all the tank commanders Cadian. That will free up 95pts. Dropping 2 plasma pistols and counting 3 of the spare 4 pts, I will be able to include a Basilisk at 108pts. So the second battalion would look like this:

Cadian Battalion:
Pask
Battlecannon (unfortunately no punisher or executioner in that kit), 2 plasma cannons, lascannon, storm bolter

Tank Commander
Battle Cannon, 2 Plasma Cannons, Lascannon, storm bolter

Tank Commander
Battle Cannon, 2 Plasma Cannons, Lascannon, storm bolter

Infantry squad
Missile Launcher

Infantry squad
Missile Launcher

Infantry squad
Missile Launcher

Special weapons squad
3 flamers

Veteran squad
3 Grenade Launchers, Missile Launcher

Basilisk
Heavy Bolter

Is it a list that could be reasonably competitive?

Are you sure your prices are reflecting the correct ninth edition prices for scions, eg, 9 points per model for the troops, 10 points for a command squad member, and 40 points per tempestor prime?
Your comment about 7 points worries me. Also the fact that basilisks are, per the ninth edition costs, 125 with their minimum loadout and no longer 108.

The glory days of eigth for scions were pretty awesome (I tabled the hell out of a few good players) but you end up with a rather less flashy force in nineth pricing, its not TERRIBLE but you might be down a couple infantry units by the end of it.

A generic thought on scions, however, lambdas aren't "longer range" scions, so on ninth's smaller board sizes may have trouble killing the screens enough to drop in really close. I use a valkyrie or two to insure a precision drop working well, to deliver stuff right up and personal at the 5.1 inch range.
anyway, I think you may need to recompute a lot, with the new prices, but the idea itself is pretty sound, lions are a solid faction of scion overall (more so with valks but also good with gatling tauroxes) and they won't mind having a few tank commanders to support them.

Thanks for the reply.

You are completely correct - I was using CA 2019 pricing as CA2020 doesn't seem to exist anywhere I look. Didn't realise the price point of the models had changed - thought it would be changing with a new codex. So thanks for making me aware. Any idea where I can find the new points costs?

Definitely going to have to go back to the drawing board but still thinking of using the patrol boxed sets to make the majority of the force. On just the Scions with the numbers you gave me it puts me 76pts out compared to what they were in CA2019.

Thanks, I was just coming on to say that I'd found it on an Excel Google Doc - so many less points to play with!

Anyhow managed to create a list that I like the look of will require 2 more Scion Patrol boxes on top of the 2 I have already, and 3 Guard patrol boxes but nothing else.

Scions Battalion (Lambdan Lions - all units get a further -1ap to all weapons):
Tempestor Prime
Rod, Keys to the Armoury WL trait, Kurov's Aquila

Tempestor Prime
Rod, Grand Strategist WL trait (costs 1cp should make more than that back), Laurels of Command

10 Scions
4 Plasma guns, 1 plasma pistol

10 Scions
4 Plasma guns, 1 plasma pistol

10 Scions
4 Melta guns, 1 plasma pistol

4 Man Scion Command squad
4 Melta guns

4 Man Scion Command squad
4 Hotshot Vollyguns

Taurox Prime
Gattling Cannon, 2 hotshot vollyguns, storm bolter

Taurox Prime
Gattling Cannon, 2 hotshot vollyguns, storm bolter

Taurox Prime
Gattling Cannon, 2 hotshot vollyguns, storm bolter

Taurox Prime
Gattling Cannon, 2 hotshot vollyguns, storm bolter

Cadian Battalion:
Tank Commander
Battle Cannon, 2 Plasma Cannons, Lascannon

Tank Commander
Battle Cannon, 2 Plasma Cannons, Lascannon

Tank Commander
Battle Cannon, 2 Plasma Cannons, Lascannon

Infantry Squad
Lascannon

Infantry Squad

Infantry Squad

1997pts

Side note - for BS3 Guardsmen, Grenade Launcher = 5pts, Plasma gun = 5pts??? Thats mental. When it was 3pts vs 7pts I still would have chosen Plasma over the Launcher.
Pity that they have fudged all the heavy weapons that took years to get a little decrease by a little decrease until they were where they should be too.

Not a guard player.. not yet. But I like the list. If your taking 3 LRs though wouldn't it be worth considering a spearhead to give them all obsec? Just curious.

He would have to give up the 3rd troop choice of gaurd regulars, and downgrade a command tank to a heavy support slot.

This would, however, leave him 75 points to play with, enough to add in a heavy weapons squad. (I know he has 3 starter kits of gaurd, so he has1 team each per box.)

Even with no third infantry, the HWS can hold some objectives, especially if its near an obsec leman russ, and it has a bit better kick at longer range than a 10 man squad. Something like lascannons, even, is possible and in that budget.

But it is one tank commander made weaker, and 4 bodies less. So its a sort of choice he may not want to make outright.

Something like (with the models his kits have access to, and the exact same point cost)...

tank commander A
tank commander B
10 man gaurd (one has a grenade launcher)
10 man gaurd
6 man special weapons squad (3 grenade)
1 platoon commander
1 heavy support leamn russ

would be another legal spearhead detachment -- and he might come out ahead on obsec that way with the tanks I gather he is limited by the forcepool of those three starter kits, though, so he is not getting but so creative here.

Guard gaurd gAAAARDity Gaurd gaurd.

Thanks for the replies again guys. Definitely considering what you have said. I'm looking through all the various rules and will come back with a more fine tuned list.

Btw I have access to more than just the Patrol boxed sets - everything a mid sized GW would sell, but nothing more than that. For example it didn't have the plasma/melta Guard blister packs or the 2nd verison of Russ builds (Punisher/Executioner etc).
