Hello, Pappy here. Starting what I'd like to be a competitive Death Guard list, but unsure what all to get. I've no real budget outside of getting espensiff stuff over time or off ebay, but I'm unsure what specifically to get.

Currently, I've got Mortarion and I've a Sicaran on the way. I see lots of stuff on getting Deathshroud to go with Mortarion, but outside that I'm unsure what else. Any help would be appreciated and repaid in PappyNurgle hugs!

Hard to tell with the new codex on the horizon but a safe bet is probably 3 Plagueburst Crawlers. I would say eye up the daemons codex as well to run nurglings but you never know, the new codex might make plague Marines mega immense.

Oh, and unfortunately Morty's really not the best for competitive... but then things might change with the new book...

There used to be a lot of cheap DG on ebay, not sure if it's still the case.

Of the common ebay stuff, I'd pick up some Plague Marines, Poxwalkers, and Myphitic Blight Haulers.

Currently Blight Termies, Plague Marines with bolters, Myphitic Blight Launchers, and Plagueburst Crawlers are nice things to have.

However, as has been metioned, things might change in a month.

One thing almost guaranteed that I don't see changing with the new Codex. Get a buttload of Troop choice Plague Marines, as the others have already mentioned.
They're traditionally fantastic at holding objectives, likely to stay that way as they're going to keep their profile and very likely some form of FNP... and the new edition has a much stronger focus on holding mission objectives than before.

well you'll need HQs and troops to start with so I'd start with 3 squads of plague marines and some HQs of your choice (proably take a sorcerer as one choice) painting though that inital batch will last you until the death guard codex comes out proably sometime in november

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

If you're looking to be competitive, wait until the book comes out. You've likely got 2 months tops to go and we can only speculate as to how much it will shake things up.

I would get the blight hawlers while you can. They are easy to build and gw mentioned awhile ago some easy builds were going away. There is a chance this isn't on the table but at the same time.....

At this moment they are very good. At 25$ a model they are a steal for a death guard army. You can go with the great unclean nurgle bell deamon trick to revive them when they die, they give cover to others around them, they get bs 3+ when in groups of 3 or more (max squad is 3 atm though), and they each have a multimelta and missile launcher making them actually good, mobile, anti tank for their cost in game and in real life.

So yeah, plauge marines and 3 of these guys is where I would start, and when their rules change I think they are a safe bet at still being good.

Try hunting down the 8th edition starter sets that are still available, there is no cheaper way to start DG than buying two of those.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.

Competitive deathguard is a bit of a misnomer. DG have not been competitive for many years until recently with the war of the spider book. The list you run will vary depending on which of the 7 plague companies you choose to run and at least 3 are competitive. That being said we know the codex is coming so everything can change.

The biggest thing we know of is that Plaguemarines and probably deathshroud and blightlord terminators are all going up 1 wound. This means that these are all viable options to consider but their points cost will change which will make or break them as a competitive choice.

The current competitive core choices are
ABOVE ALL ELSE a Foul Blightspawn. These with Overwhelming generosity and Foulgush strats melt stuf
Then

Daemon Prince with wings
Plaguemarines
Blightlord terminators
Plagueburst Crawlers - recommend you buy them new boxed and magnetise for the weapon options because both are good buying from ebay gets you usually only one weapon option which I did and I regret it
Myphitic Blight Haulers
Biologus putrifier
and even the humble rhino

Bear in mind that all of these can be invalidated by the new codex or their suitability can change. I recommend you buy some Plaguemarines and a couple of rhino's get started on those and then hopefully by the time you're finished with those come join us on the Deathguard tactics thread where we might even have some leaks to discuss with you.

Actual competitive death guard means daemon troops and DG toys in almost all cases though.
