I've decided to list what I have of the Imperial Guard (now Astra Militarum) along with additional pieces from the Inquisition since they often use IG armies as their base. I haven't played since 5th Ed nor owned a rule book since 6th Ed, so I need some help adapting what I have to the new force organization style. Please give me some suggestions for how to assemble my army in various game styles. I know there's new terms with different rules like Vanguard, Patrol, etc, but no idea what they actually do or mean. Since we're currently transitioning into 9th, I'm holding back on shelling out for new codices and core rule books, so I appreciate any and all help with this. I have also just found the app BattleScribe and am using it to help catalogue and count points. Thank you all for any help you feel like providing this inexperienced player who has a bigger collection than they know how to use.
If this is not the right place for this, let me know so I can move it and replace it with an appropriate thread or simply delete it as needed.

Too much stuff! Suggestion in spoiler for a mixed cadians and catachans army.
Spoiler:
Medium cadian infantry battalion as primary detachment.
2 company commander officers with a powersword, or a plasma pistol (pick one for each)
1 psyker primaris
1 cadian officer platoon commander (elite, not command slot) with a chainsword and laspistol
3 command squads iwth 2 plasma guns and a lascannon each (and one guy with JUST a lasgun, who is part of the 60mm based heavyweaponteam you are going to have to base for modern play.)
3 infantry squads with a flamer and a lascannon each, sargents armed with chainsword and laspistol
1 heavy weapon squad with 3 mortar teams (you can flip a current 60 mm base upside down and lightly glue with a spot of tape, your existing mortar, guy, and other guy, on the base. That's legal, ish, for now).
3 chimera counts as apc. I would designate them as equpped with 2 heavy flamer and 1 stormbolter each, for now.
893 points .. a legal detachment with some good fire support teeth against enemy heavy units.
inquisitor malleus (-1 cp for "authority of the inquisition" and a psyker. This gives him TWO activation, TWO deny, and TWO spells (plus smite!) known, as well as a relic to be -1 to be wounded. All for 60 points!
953 so far.
Second detachment, Armor and infantry battalion catachans. (-3cp for detachment, -2 cp for tank aces on manticores)
1 company commander with the powerfist. Cause. 45
1 leman russ tank commander tank with all your stuff on it, 225, or maybe 230, but close to that math-wise.
1 other leman russ tank commander with all that stuff, 225
1 ministerium priest with a weapon of some kind 45 (not the eviscerator, that's more).
1 platoon commander with power sword and laspistol
3 infantry squads with a flamer each 165
2 manticores with full payload tank ace ability 290
you have 22 points left to play with. Put a few powerswords on sargents in the catachan side, (15) and even the cadian side (5) and you have only 2 points "waste" in a 2000 point list.
You will drastically change all this of course, but the brutal strength doctrine and the flamers give the catachans a nice role here, and the cadians are along to blow up armor and pour their shots in with lots of rerolls. Your army is swift (movemovemove actually makes the catachan troops faster) and has some transport protection. You have good indirect fire and a pair of decent battlewagons up front, so the enemy can't completely ignore your armor. Your 2 psykers can cast and deny 3 spells a round, which is good for avoiding "abhor the witch" and not shabby performance wise.
Its not a GREAT gaurd army for ninth, but it uses stuff in your massive list to get you playing in this edition right away.

Thanks, very much appreciated! This is a bigger help than you may realize as it gives me some much needed insight into the setup and organization of an (at least average) army in the newer systems. I also appreciate the tips on how to rebase the older two base heavy weapons. I'd been thinking about how to run them without cutting the old metal models slotta tabs off. My best idea is simply take a 60mm and use thick mud effects to sink in the current bases so they can be removed at will. Basically turn the 60mm into a removeable squad tray like they make for Apoc. They'll be a little taller than normal, but it shouldn't be a problem considering some of the amazing bases I've seen here. Luckily, the 3 Cadian mortars I have are one of the first things I got and are current plastic sculpt with a single large base. IG plastic models haven't changed in all these years.
I realize now I forgot to mention I have an old Baneblade kit NiB that I picked up way back and never had the courage to assemble and paint, but luckily that shouldn't affect your recommended army list. I have so much stuff mostly because I am a collector of old GW and pick up small lots here and there when I can, but partly because I always wanted to get into Apoc and the old rules put more emphasis on large infantry masses in IG.
There's just too much I never knew and too much I have to learn anew with all the rules changed. Way back, the only Psyker I had was an Aspiring Sorcerer for a squad of Rubric marines, so I never got too far into psychic powers. I think I just cast Bolt of Change a lot in the hopes of making a free Chaos Spawn in the middle of an enemy squad.
Abhor the Witch sounds vaguely familiar, but it may be something I've heard mentioned on this website. I do remember the Perils of the Warp table though. Unfortunately, since I never got to play a lot, most of my knowledge is theory only and I often lost to my friends Orks with my then small CSM army.
I don't know if this is technically legal anymore, but what if I ran CSM and (Rouge) IG together? I did it once or twice back in the day when I only had a minimal army of each. Since you set the bar at 2000pts, I assume that's the normal point value for a friendly game these days. What if I made a main force of CSM and the secondary force IG? I don't have much vehicle support in either, but they might work well together. Especially if I mix my loyalist SM in. Or perhaps an inquisition force of SM and IG and nix the CSM? I think my real problem is I don't know how to properly balance an army. I just have a little bit of here and there spread around the main three factions and roughly 90% of my collection by models is infantry. :/ That aside, if I did use either CSM or SM for a combined force, I also have some AoSSCE and KB from a recent trade. I think those can fairly easily fit in as CC troops. KB could be Berserkers, CC cultists, etc. SCE could be Assault squads and Bladeguard (with hammers ).
In the end, I just need to make a cohesive fighting force that can at least stand a chance in friendly games using what I have. Preferably one in each faction for smaller games and one combining them for larger games so that I can get a feel for each one and how they interact with each other together. You've provided me a detailed - and even pointed - list for a 2000pt IG/Inquisition army. Thanks a lot! Now to find someone to play with in my area.
P.S. Forgive my essay, I can go a bit overboard when I get excited.

Incidentqlly, the baneblade kit can be carefully assembled to be able to proxy any of 8 separate bane variants .. and you can also modify the list I gave you by dropping the three chimeras, shifting the command squads to somehting cheaper and more durable (think "more infantry squads" with the plasma dispersed among them, adn with a bit of point futzing, I bet you could afford a stripped down baneblade (a cheaper one like a banehammer that is also a bit of a transport.)
This would give you
5 squads cadians + officers and psyker
1 inquisitor
the catacahans you now have .. 3 squads worth, with 2 manticores, 2 leman russes, and a third detachment (superheavy) which is I think 410 total points for the cheap one.
That's not a terrible list for casual play -- plenty of troops (8) and plenty of tank power, because even a weak baneblade main cannon is nothing to ignore long.
I don't know if it's different now or not, but unfortunately my kit only includes the Banecannon and the short barrel Demolisher style cannon option. I don't have the proper hull for the fixed turret variants nor the skill to make one myself. I suppose in a friendly game I could proxy it as any variant easily enough though. Thanks for the secondary option. I will keep it in mind for when I finally build the super heavy.
