Hey mate!

These look great. Love the cohesive individuality! It's a really creative take on classic Chaos colours that works for the ragtag nature of your dudes.

The guys who have a lot of bone on them are my favourite - it really pops and contrasts well with the other colours.

Any thoughts on what you're doing with basing for them?

How in the heck are these only your second unit?! These look GREAT.

Thanks for the kind words. Although I'm new to this, I do have a background in other arty-farty things, so It comes quite quickly. I understand a few basic principles yknow? Bit of a head start.

Allo mate!

Truth be told, I'm actually nervous about basing them. I feel like for special bases, you have to do it before attaching the model, and I'm nervous about doing them with the models on.
Hypothetically I think snow would nicely contrast the colours, but snow reflects light and they are not lit from the bottom, only the top. Otherwise I'd go industrial tiling, but you cant really do that after the fact!

I'm open to suggestions from people cause I have never based a model before.

With sand and cork and other plastic bits yeah you'd generally get basing sorted before you prime.

Depending on what you wanted to do, it'd probably not be the end of the world to slice or pull the bases off here, get them sorted, and then glue them back on - that would require a relatively flat surface to work though and you'd have to be careful about leaving glue marks etc.

e.g. for snow, you could use cork to raise the parts of the base that would connect to the feet, prime and paint them, stick the mini back on, and then add snow in around wherever you want it.

GW (and a bunch of other companies) also make cool products that work as brush-on basing effects, generally only needing a drybrush and/or some tufts or other small additions afterwards afterwards to make some really nice effects.

Here's a good read of GW products if you are interested:

My mind immediately went to snow too for contrast; but every mini I've ever painted has a snow base so I am hardly an objective advisor

A sort of grey ashland waste would probably do essentially the same job and if you dotted in some metallic or bone debris you could keep it visually interesting and match some of the colours from the minis themselves.

Great job especially if they’re only your second ever unit! The red is especially well done, nice transitions between the highlights.

As for the bases, I’d do like tzurk suggests and pull/cut them free, that would give you free reign on what you do. I think a bit of tile work and some snow could work well together. Only using a light dusting should ease the concern over not having highlighted a reflection.
