My first attempts at wet blending cloth ever... As the title says my first mini's painted in a fair while, currently building a 2k SM army through what's turning out to be quite an expensive conversion. One of the lost/forgotten legions. No airbrush (yet)

I've got a squad of modded sturnguard, vanguard vets (FW jump packs and a kitbash of mk3) to come but I'm still a way off with the command and the tactical squad as yet, touch up's to be done and ink around the armor missed a few mold lines regrettably and am going back to some of the scopes and gems for a few more coats, also some ink to get into the edges of the eyes but all in all I'm fairly content!

Also painted the pieces to kitbash a venerable dread into a chaplain - pics to come.

Any thoughts, tips, or suggestions as to what I could have done better and what I need to be doing to improve would be much appreciated, apologies for the dust...

Not bad. Paintwork looks clean and 'inside the lines'

The gold/purple base rims are... interesting. Obviously that's your call, but I'd avoid that sort of thing personally. It draws the eye down the model in the wrong direction and away from the focal points which are generally the face and central areas.

Also, you're trying to sprint in the olympics before you can walk by jumping straight to wet blending. It's a much more advanced technique. I'd leave that for later. Personally I don't even like it as a technique. I prefer using layers to build colour transitions.

I'd focus more on painting clean and neat. Get your units done to a good basic standard if your focusing on army building. This way you can work on more advanced techniques as you get more proficient, and can then carry those over to character or centrepiece models.

The rims are more to differentiate squads, probably just an odd ocd thing going on there! Cheers, yes it did feel like a struggle and I wasn't happy with much of the results - Started to get a little better with time (the banner of the ancient) but I really struggled with the large areas of cloth and getting any kind of smooth transition. I started with water and moved over to technical medium - which I found much better to work with, as far as merging the colour goes (looking at the ancient helm - it certainly needs some more work, along with highlights on the armor.

I will be giving layering the Sternguard, as there is a fair bit more cloth there, I'll upload the results after I've touched up the tactical squad to a point I'm happy with.

I've got plenty of time to give them tlc considering the cost of a 2k army

Nice job on that spear tip. The color transition is very smooth and it looks very hot to the touch.

Cheers bud, I'd like to bring some more orange out from the middle either side to lose the streaks but it should look cool on my techmarine!

Few of the chaplain dreadnought bits I've been working on, the body's for the vet vanguard, armor plating for the passenger heavy bolter mount on landspeeders and some bits for the sternguard. Also looking to get a breach squad from FW to use as a squad of 5 company vets with combi plasma which I'm going to steal from the custodian guard.

Second the kudos for the hot metal spear. That is a nice transition. I'm probably going to sound super picky here but I would generally do it the other way round though, so the hottest section is at the base of the weapon. To me that suggests a lava type weapon, rather than one that's fresh off the forge anvil.

I'm with you, my first attempt with the power weapons was the sword which is utter rubbish, will clean it down and move from yellow to red with that, also going to be changing the power claw over to the same colour. Too much to do and no spare time - the one time a second lockdown would be handy!

I also checked out some of your purple/emperors children stuff, super nice work dude and a reference point for me to go back to.

Started to add a lighter grey to give some highlights and a little more life to the grey, I went over the models twice, it's pretty messy but I'm going to dull it down with some super diluted eshin grey where needed and then touch up the recesses with some nuln. Gave the gold on the armor trim a brighten up and nuln oiled the shoulder pads to get some shade around the rivets and then bought some of the gold back up.

It might be a little bit counter intuitive but try using mixture of yellow + base purple color for the highlights on the purple cloak. It will yield higher contrast with smoother transition.

I Will do - I've heard they are complementary colours? I'm no art student at all so I do admit, I watched a video by miniac? a while back which was on exactly that, he was very subtle with the yellow. I'll give it a go on the next piece of cloth. He also said white can be quite tough to blend *white into colour and often results in quite a pastel finish. My layman's understanding of painting

The damn joins on the power packs... going to have to green stuff and repaint that...

Exactly. It's a common mistake in painting because of the preconceived notion of "white is bright". Using complimentary colors will actually yield better illusion of depth than dulling the integrity of the colors by mixing whites into them.

Added more and cleaned the previous highlights, going to dull them down a little and pick a few areas to bring back up.

Just ordered a set of FW deathguard heads for the sternguard and x2 legion upgrade sets to finish off the tactical marine sergeant - I want the com/radio helm & backpack for a unit in both of the 5man squads, which I've put the scoped boltguns on already.

I also managed to pick up a vet van jump pack with the large eagle icon real cheap - just need to remove the skulls. The rest will have the FW mk4? jump packs. I've found 5 beaky helms for them also which is a minor miracle. Along with a sternguard eagle icon and a GK stave I'm going to make my chaplains crozius from, a few IH upgrades for my techmarine and finally some templar chainsaws with the chains for the vet vans.

Hopefully they will be here next week and I can take a break from the tactical squad.

Right I'm bored AF of attempting to highlight these now, anything I can do to speed the process up next time (rather than building my main colour and then adding 3 layers of highlights then dulling it down followed by 2 more highlights..) I'm putting these down now as they are doing my head in - I cant wait to start hitting the Sternguard once the final bits for them arrive.

Cheers dude, it was a random colour choice to a degree, I'm still unsure of the red/orange - I may copy what I've done on the DA shield dude things I'm modding, a little more subtle.

The bases will hopefully be a nice touch when 'on the field' but I can see why it's a bit much for some, especially the purple - I'm going to wet blend them, a good place to practice it also I guess, considering how flat the surface is.

I'm going back to the command squad after the Sternguards (a lot of cloth and bionics so they should look cool!) to repeat what I've done with the tactical squad(s).

Edit: These arrived today, the last post until some more painting is done! A lot!! of skulls to remove before I even prime them..

Done with the tactical squads for the time being, fair few layers of highlight, dulled down and brought back up a couple of times. Black ink into the recesses, between armor trim and finished off the red on the purity seals. Just some shading and highlights left to do on the armor trims and weapons now. Feeling pretty happy with them now in all fairness

Made a start on some of the cloth and have gone back and improved some of the previous purples, all bits are in various stages of layers and I've thumbed most of the torso's while painting... I added a few yellow highlights under the wash just to see how they look, personally, I like it more than the original - still more layers to be added but it's getting there.

Also, base coated and started to layer the custom Vanguard squad!

A few of the Sternguard and Vet Vanguard I've been slowly working on, I've added in some Dorn yellow on the cloth rather than white. I completely ruined one robe, the model is kind of a write-off, I'm going to either strip it down or simply cut bits off and replace the torso, I've also replaced the white on the wax highlights with dorn yellow, probably not noticeable but I prefer it.

Added some highlights to the armor but it's a work in progress. The bases are also now complete as I wanted a break from painting cloth. Quite a lot of detail to work on but I think the most valuable thing I've taken away is using fewer layers to achieve the paint I want, I've mixed my nuln with some stormhost silver (after spilling half the pot) and this has the same effect as what I was doing - which was 3 layers of paint rather than a thin wash or two.

Edit, Flying bases for the Vet Vanguard on the way, finished up the armor, and pained the beaky helms. Just waiting for the assault squad to come back in stock at FW to finish them up, just jump packs and right arms needed now, Sternguard is getting there - base layers for the legs and torso's now complete, going to be a lot of fecking about to get the iron hand bolt rifles to fit with the arms of the regular marine. I've already had a look and it's going to be a semi-nightmare.

Finally, the radio com backpack and scoped bolt guns have been put onto the models in the tactical squad. Pics to come once bits are assembled!

The Vet Vanguards (Scrapped the robed sgt and I'm going to replace with another model, keeping the relic blade + power sword combo (possibly a storm shield). I've started a lot of the basic painting on the Sternguard now, with details, layers and highlights to follow.

I've started to add a little ink to the commander and lt, going to take a break from NMM and pimp up the command squad until I can finish the Vanguards.

Cheers dude, they are getting there! I wouldn't go that far, the cloth on your Eldar is looking crisp!

Been a bit busy with work + study so not much has really happened paint-wise, I've started the detail on the Sternguard and decided to just remove the hand/gun from the iron hands bits I'm using to make the Sternguard (skulls removed obviously... The mk iii heads are now finished with visors completed (Forgeworld stuff isn't as crisp in the recesses as I'd hoped so the painting looks a bit worse on most of the FW bits, that may just be my error though rather than anything to do with the product)

Nothing else to report, for the time being, been a bit of a dull week with regards to progression on the army.

Edit 7/12: Flying bases arrived today for the Vanguard Vet's, got both small and medium to get some nice height variation between the squads (not bought the second yet but looking for a squad of; chainswords, power claws and th/ss eventually)

Almost all the other bits required to finish off the stern, vanguard and tactical squad now, sadly no pretty chain swords in stock anywhere at the min so still waiting on them. Both the 5man sternguards now have fully painted weapons, legs and 6/10 torso's completed and a majority of the shoulder pads en-route or completed.

Today is a happy day! Almost everything I need to complete the Van Vets, Company Vets & Sternguard - plus the first of the Venerable Dreadnoughts turned up today. Just a pile of unpainted grey at the second, I'm looking forward to seeing how the Spellcrow chainmail looks on the marines, first time buying anything non-GW, it looks good so far!

Few little gems coming over the next couple of months model-wise, which I'm really looking forward to!

Edit: Few Pics of the almost completed Tactical Sgt's and marines with comm's (need to touch up a few spots - especially helmets) plus the kitbash I'm going to be making two Chaplain Dreadnoughts with!! Its bare-bones at the second but I've had this planned for almost a year now and it's nice to see it take shape - mainly raven wing bits going on but some Kromlech additions!

Got a bit too excited about the dread arriving, painting til 2 am but I'm loving how it's turning out. A little bit of an imperator theme going on. Going to go back and finish my squads as this has completely sidetracked me.

Few images of the Sternguard WIP, glue everywhere, and the arms still unpainted (usually I will paint before I assemble but I wanted to see how they looked - may remove the limbs again for painting depending on how much of a pain it is) I've run out of eagle shoulder pads so that's put an abrupt end on finishing them.

The chainmail has been added to various squads, loving how they look, I am certainly ordering another 10. I think they give the army the crusade look, despite the armor being a much more modern pattern. I have got a ton of bits from DA, SW, WS, and IH to bring each model to life once the main painting is done. I've started to cut and glue the arms/chain swords for the Vet Vanguards now but again I'm waiting on shoulder pads.

Another late nite painting, a small amount of progress visually on the Sternguard but I've been working on the armor, weapons and how dull/bright things are, picking out bolts and finishing up (still a lot of highlighting to go) the arms. Another little kitbash with the demon from the GK, the hand looks a tad large but oh well, I think its a good trade-off. Starting work on the comm's model for each Sternguard now and their Sgt's. Having to do a little bit of cutting to get the Sgt's sorted. I've also started finishing up the chain swords/arms for the Van Vets.

I gave in and went to dry brushing for the demon head, I've resisted it up until this point, I wet blended again on the dreadnoughts highlights, but my paint was too thick, I also need to resist adding more paint to get the blend and add some water instead (I think).

Small update on the force; had an orbital bombardment on my collection of half-painted bitz thanks to a pot of nuln oil... Quite the setback! A few pics of a few of the lucky warriors who avoided the fallout.

- Chaplains Crozius made, still needs painting for the most part.
- Added the servo skull to the dread considering I've removed the targeting system to put wings on it.
- Played about with the positioning of the Van Vets and have removed a couple of pauldrons to be replaced by more decorative ones.
- Started work on the Sternguard Stg's, sadly I only have 1 banner for the time being.
Edit: Look how sh*t that Stg's knee/leg is! Repaint incoming!

So yeah back to having to repaint half my finishing bits for the models which are now covered in nuln, happy new year!

2nd Edit: Few images of the Sternguard Sgt postures and the Vet Vanguards' new left pauldrons. (both WIP)

03/01: Tried to paint my gemstones by building layers like in the tutorials. There are literally about 20 layers of diluted red/yellow on there built up from the recommended black base-coat and it still looks a tad dull.

10/01: Put the primer on all my little detail pieces, all ready to be painted now - should bring all the models to life with these little additions and make them 100% one of a kind! Pretty busy IRL and I've committed to this month's painting challenge so they are probably going to just sit there til next month.

Small bump, back to work on my SM homebrew. I'm calling the two com units from my sternguard done, had a remodel of the sgt's and they will be the next models I will focus on.

- I've got a kitbash of Custodes/Stormcast coming for my Terminator Chapter Master.
- 5 Custodes shields en-route so I can get back to my Breach/Company Vet's (stormbolters are all painted and ready to go).
- Few additional bits, including a second banner backpack and alternative pauldrons for the 2nd sternguard sgt.
- Started to order some bits for the Devastator squad I'll be modding from HH marines.
- Found some pretty chainswords to finish the Van Vet's.

I'm going to scrap the idea of mk3/4 jump packs and replace them with a set from Sanguinary Guards (also gives me some nice future kitbash options with the remaining sprue) and I'm going to equip the Sgt with a Stormcast prosecutor helm.

Today is a good day!

- Terminator captain kitbash bits arrived, plus my Company Vet's storm shields along with a couple of other more boring pieces.
(what is the size difference between SM termi arms and the Custodes anyone please, as I'm yet to work out modding the weapons/arms)

It will most probably be a while before I have a decent amount of time to paint anything but I'm looking forward to it. One more order and the tactical, stern, van vets, company vets and HQ will be wrapped up. Next step will be a stockpile of Venerable Dreads and some MK4 recon marines from FW to proxy as eliminators for my list.
