My first mini's painted in several years, currently building a 2k SM army through what's turning out to be quite a prolonged and expensive conversion. One of the lost/forgotten legions. All hand painted, no airbrush.

Any thoughts, tips, or suggestions would be appreciated, apologies for the dust... I've dragged back up the terribly written little back story to the legion, it has been an underlying inspiration for the colour scheme and eventually the scenery (disclaimer: it doesn't tie into anything, grammatically incorrect and unedited so a dose of laughing salt is required)

Storm Eagles, II Legion

The entire (lost) second legion was sent out en-mass, by order of the emperor, to assist in the main 3rd Rangdan xenocide campaigns during the early years of the great crusade. The legions chief librarian was sent a telepathic command directly from Malcador himself, demanding the legion to recon and assault a potential remaining Rangdan stronghold on a previously bombarded planet, undertaken by the dark angels. The planet was located on the outer fringes of the northern sector of the Nascent, while the Dark Angel's forces were now fighting a savage and desperate battle against the main Rangdon planetary strongholds, where the Xenos had consolidated their forces, clustered into a defensive shell within the central sector, after months of hit and run guerrilla warfare, which exacted great casualties on the first legion.

On the 11th day from estimated arrival, communications to the emperor, the Astronomicum and other imperial legions were lost, they continued with their mission regardless, undertaking long-range scanning from outer system orbit, confirming Xeno life form signatures and massed activity at several locations across the planet’s surface. Iolarius himself watched over the assessment of the planetary city schematics, observing that many of the cities had previously been mining centres. He concluded that before launching a full-scale offensive he would send several small preliminary recon forces, tasked with the purpose of assessing the defensibility and strength of all key strategic locations on the planet, the level of Xeno activity in each sector and any structural weak spots within the various Xeno hive cities and outer barrier walls. The long-range scans were confirmed by the preliminary ground recon forces, identifying large scores of underground hive cities, bunkers and tunnel network complexes, reaching deep into the mountainous planet's surface. the Xeno had hastily rebuilt, or more regenerated Hive strongholds and large defence forces still remained in concentrated pockets across the globe. The recon forces noted all the outer walls were not only repaired but had been fortified with some form of skeletal Xeno technology.

Leaving no other option but to descend directly into the centres of these hives with the entirety of the legion's forces, while armoured battalions of dreadnoughts and titans would assault the megacities walls at the opposite side of the cities to the commander's intended drop sites, acting as a decoy to draw away enemy forces from the main army’s intended landing co-ordinates. The storm eagles immediately launched a devastating orbital bombardment, in the wake of the orbital strikes the legion deployed its titans and heavy armour. A second volley of orbital strikes were made whilst the armour established its position. This was instantly followed by an all-out ground assault via drop pod, the pods followed directly in the heat trail of the orbit strikes, changing direction at the last second towards the designated drop sites, preventing any and all chances of the enemy intercepting or reacting to the ground assault.
This led to the decimation of the remaining Rangdan surface forces, the initial skirmish was swiftly followed by further dreadnought drop pods to breach the tunnel complex defences, while the titan force suppressed and pummelled the bone-forge strongholds, these inner cities and underground fights slowed the legion almost to halt, with intense close combat fighting taking place for three days short of two weeks. Leading the legion deep underground within the depths of the fortresses, this subterranean fighting lasted for several weeks, depleting the legion's notoriously already thin ranks, in a drawn-out war of attrition.

After the eventual victory in the outer sector, (the day Alpharius was found, unknown to the ii legion at the time) they deployed and armed biogas bombs deep in the strongholds and hive cities, activated the delay timers and hastily returned to their ships, onboard the flagship (Curiann) they plotted a new course to their secondary objective, which was to assist their brother Dark Angles in the central sector. They prepared the ship(s) for warp jump, to the aid of their brothers but upon entering the warp, Curiann and the entire fleet were caught in the raging centre of a warp tempest and were dragged far, far into the tumultuous storms of darkness.
The Dark Angels, after their costly victory on the central sector planets, sent communications to brother Iolarius, followed by scouting ships to the outer fringes and Dark Angels more powerful psykers delved into the warp to try and find any traces of the chapter psykers, disturbances in the warp or traces of the astropaths, as the legion was due to assist the main campaign en-mass after their mission in the outer fringes was complete. Despite the efforts of the first no communication signal was ever received by the dark angels from the second and no com or psychic connection could be made to the second legion by the first, despite the dark angel scout forces confirming the successful purges on the fringe worlds recently having been undertaken. No sign of the second legion aside from the bloodshed left deep under the planet’s surface

In due course, the dark angels and space wolves primarchs were both instructed to never speak of the lost legion and ensure the legionaries who fought there swore an oath of silence by order of the emperor himself, though a plethora of rumours on the legion's fate was abundant in the years immediately following the Rangdan campaigns, the eclipsing events of the other legion’s sagas of glory, bravery and honour, along with the eventual inception and consequences of the Horus Heresy ensured the legion was pushed out of minds of the emperors’ people and forgotten for time immemorial by all but the oldest and most trusted of the emperor’s children.

What they saw in the warp.

A Number of the legion’s ships were, over time, corrupted by the warp, and bitter conflict reigned onboard the ships. Fighting these insane and deranged brothers, along with evil manifestations from the warp tempest, fighting a bitter struggle for every inch of their ships.
Over the coming hours and days, the ships' crews would succumb to this evil corruption as the legion turned on its-self, losing all but 11 of its ships to this battle of corruption and attrition whilst caught in the savage waves of the warp tempest.
In the final hours before the legions rout and abandonment of the other 10 ships, A sprawling horde of tangled daemons poured in from the wounds, in the flagship's fractured hull, which were a result of the sustained warp storm damage.

A fierce battle within their ship’s hull ensued, as the legion's remnants were pushed back to the upper decks of the ship, a pitch blackness seeped into all the shadows of the ship, a thick black tar, oozing, swirling, writhing and pushing into the scant remaining light.
on the liquid's surface of this infernal warp tar, the congealed, twisted and contorted faces of their fallen brothers could be seen, screaming out in silent anger and agony, the black void poured ever closer to the remaining marines of the second legion, who stood stalwart in defence of their ship, their commander, primarch and the imperium. As the darkness was about to overrun and consume the desperate legion remnants, it paused, hesitating undulating, in places ferociously lunging at the marines but seeming to be held back, restrained by some unknown force.at this moment in time, a giant daemonic feathered beast flickered and shimmered in the darkness, slowly becoming more tangible with each flicker of time, swirling, in all the colours of the galaxy, slowly ebbing its way into existence from the black shadows of writhing anguish. The shadow waves ebbed ever back as the entity flashed ever more certainly into existence. the tide being slowly consumed by the beast, towering above the space marines, flickering in and out of reality within the glimmering, resplendent colours of all things glorious and foul.

The entire legion, at this moment, suffered a psychic attack, which crippled them, both mentally and physically. bringing them to their knees, this was followed by a vision of the emperor, desiccated upon his throne, a line of humans trailed miles out of the main palace, circling the entire globe of Terra. Each in this line radiated, with an aura of psykic power and appeared to be giving his or her life and powers, freely, some may say happily to the emperor, who was slumped, cloaked at his throne and alter. the beast whispered, in a broken serpentine tone, stating that the sacrificed citizens of the imperium were giving their powers to ensure the emperor's survival in the physical realm. Offering their life as a symbol of their faith, Why the emperor was in this state or why the lines of faithful that encompassed terra were there, the vision did not show. What this winged shimmering, avian beast showed in his vision, was the psychic energy that was being freely given to the emperor was not the only thing taken, the souls were bound to another, another nameless and faceless being who had a stake in this dark deal.

The vision then passed, in a flash of colour. The contorted faces of those sacrificed in the name of the emperor and mankind could be seen in the daemonic twisted faces of the legions of agony, which stood before the remains of the doomed second legion, in what they now believed to be their last desperate and doomed stand, onboard their flagship. As fast as the visions had struck them, they were gone, in swirling flashes of vivid colour, cries of agony, which were intertwined with insane laughter, the writhing cacophony of colour was, as the shadows of darkness before, was being drawn backwards by a seemingly unstoppable force. Behind the swirling mass of avian beast, the remembrancer, eyes glowing and chanting in an unknown language stood, she had been assigned – begrudgingly to the legion at the beginning of their mission to the Nascent sector to record, first hand, the ii legions actions, battles and victories throughout the war. She – the legion had never asked her name, as an unwanted additional burden to the legion’s forces, and to some, seen as a restriction on tactical flexibility, a songbird in the eye of a storm so far as the bulk of the legion were concerned. Despite this, onboard the storm eagle’s flagship she had remained, as was the emperor’s order.

The crew quickly came around and back to their senses from the psykic attack and sealed themselves in the command deck and navigation chamber and prepared the ship to crash back into reality.
It was shortly after this point in time, that the fleet made its final jump, an action that would cost them both their final navigator and primarch’s life, along with the legion's chief librarian and ships' remaining astropaths as a result of the sheer volume of psychic power and forces of mental stress required to make the rushed and frantic jump free from the warp storm. The sacrifice finally delivers the remnants of this once great but now almost decimated - and to the rest of the galaxy, long lost and forgotten legion back to the realms of mankind, though still troubled by their vision, a sense of foreboding and reeling from the loss of almost all of their leaders.

The primarchs second in command and tactical consultant - Tansk, apparently the second created, it is said he had been with the legion since long before the days of the two-headed eagle, had stood beside the emperor and his legion since its inception and seen the slaughter of the thunder warriors. clad in his ancient terminator armour, forged during the earliest days of the empire’s pacification of terra, he has always remained silent on the rumours and all other matters to all aside from the emperor and the legion's circle of three.
His chief apothecary - Caelus, said to be the third of the legion and the 7582nd marine ever to be created under the emperor’s decree, with a bloodline tracing back to one of the great houses of Albion, though sworn to secrecy, has now taken the position of second in tactical battle command of the remaining forces of the second legion. Tansk, with his most trusted lieutenant; Anatol D’luvion by his side have settled on one course of action, directing the legion with one single objective in mind. - Return to the emperor’s palace on terra and request immediate council with the emperor at any cost, at any price. Tansk decided - given they have only been in the warp storm for 11 days, the news of the storm, their return, the failed secondary objective, the malicious vision, the loss of their primarch Iolarius and news of monstrous avian demon can all be reported directly to the emperor himself upon their return home to terra.

Though with no navigator or astropath, less than a chapter’s strength remaining of the legion, all of their titans and almost all heavy weaponry, aside from a single reaver and scout titan along with 11 remaining, functional thunder hawk gunships were abandoned to the warp, a force to be reckoned with – though nothing but a shadow of the legion’s former martial strength. With the flagship damaged by the ravages of the warp and not knowing their co-ordinates in the universe will certainly hinder and slow the legion's return to the fold of mankind, unbeknown to them 10,000 years since the legions (now mysterious) departure from the pages of man kinds grim and dark history. They begin their pilgrimage back to terra.
Praise the emperor – or should they!

Not bad. Paintwork looks clean and 'inside the lines'

The gold/purple base rims are... interesting. Obviously that's your call, but I'd avoid that sort of thing personally. It draws the eye down the model in the wrong direction and away from the focal points which are generally the face and central areas.

Also, you're trying to sprint in the olympics before you can walk by jumping straight to wet blending. It's a much more advanced technique. I'd leave that for later. Personally I don't even like it as a technique. I prefer using layers to build colour transitions.

I'd focus more on painting clean and neat. Get your units done to a good basic standard if your focusing on army building. This way you can work on more advanced techniques as you get more proficient, and can then carry those over to character or centrepiece models.

The rims are more to differentiate squads, probably just an odd OCD thing going on there! Cheers, yes it did feel like a struggle and I wasn't happy with much of the results - Started to get a little better with time (the banner of the ancient) but I really struggled with the large areas of cloth and getting any kind of smooth transition. I started with water and moved over to technical medium - which I found much better to work with, as far as merging the colour goes (looking at the ancient helm - it certainly needs some more work, along with highlights on the armor.

I will be layering the Sternguard, as there is a fair bit more cloth there, I'll upload the results after I've touched up the tactical squad to a point I'm happy with.

I've got plenty of time to give them TLC considering the cost of a 2k army

Nice job on that spear tip. The color transition is very smooth and it looks very hot to the touch.

Cheers bud, I'd like to bring some more orange out from the middle either side to lose the streaks but it should look cool on my techmarine!

Second the kudos for the hot metal spear. That is a nice transition. I'm probably going to sound super picky here but I would generally do it the other way round though, so the hottest section is at the base of the weapon. To me that suggests a lava type weapon, rather than one that's fresh off the forge anvil.

I'm with you, my first attempt with the power weapons was the sword which is utter rubbish, will clean it down and move from yellow to red with that, also going to be changing the power claw over to the same colour. Too much to do and no spare time - the one time a second lockdown would be handy!

I also checked out some of your purple/emperors children stuff, super nice work dude and a reference point for me to go back to.

Started to add a lighter grey to give some highlights and a little more life to the grey, I went over the models twice, it's pretty messy but I'm going to dull it down with some super diluted eshin grey where needed and then touch up the recesses with some nuln. Gave the gold on the armor trim a brighten up and nuln oiled the shoulder pads to get some shade around the rivets and then bought some of the gold back up.

It might be a little bit counter intuitive but try using mixture of yellow + base purple color for the highlights on the purple cloak. It will yield higher contrast with smoother transition.

I Will do - I've heard they are complementary colours? I'm no art student at all so I do admit, I watched a video by miniac? a while back which was on exactly that, he was very subtle with the yellow. I'll give it a go on the next piece of cloth. He also said white can be quite tough to blend *white into colour and often results in quite a pastel finish. My layman's understanding of painting

The damn joins on the power packs... going to have to green stuff and repaint that...

Exactly. It's a common mistake in painting because of the preconceived notion of "white is bright". Using complimentary colors will actually yield better illusion of depth than dulling the integrity of the colors by mixing whites into them.

Added more and cleaned the previous highlights, going to dull them down a little and pick a few areas to bring back up.

Just ordered a set of FW deathguard heads for the sternguard and x2 legion upgrade sets to finish off the tactical marine sergeant - I want the com/radio helm & backpack for a unit in both of the 5man squads, which I've put the scoped boltguns on already.

I also managed to pick up a vet van jump pack with the large eagle icon real cheap - just need to remove the skulls. I've found 5 beaky helms for them also which is a minor miracle. A few IH upgrades for my Techmarine and finally Templar chainsaws for the vet vans.

On moon miranda.

Looking good, the bases are neat, the purple splash works well.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Cheers dude, it was a random colour choice to a degree, I'm still unsure of the red/orange - I may copy what I've done on the DA shield dude things I'm modding, a little more subtle.

The bases will hopefully be a nice touch when 'on the field' but I can see why it's a bit much for some, especially the purple - I'm going to wet blend them, a good place to practice it also I guess, considering how flat the surface is.

I'm going back to the command squad after the Sternguards (a lot of cloth and bionics so they should look cool!) to repeat what I've done with the tactical squad(s).

Edit: These arrived today, the last post until some more painting is done! A lot!! of skulls to remove before I even prime them.

Made a start on some of the cloth and have gone back and improved some of the previous purples, all bits are in various stages of layers and I've thumbed most of the torso's while painting... I added a few yellow highlights under the wash just to see how they look, personally, I like it more than the original - still more layers to be added but it's getting there.

Also, base coated and started to layer the custom Vanguard squad!

A few of the Sternguard and Vet Vanguard I've been slowly working on, I've added in some Dorn yellow on the cloth rather than white. I completely ruined one robe, the model is kind of a write-off, I'm going to either strip it down or simply cut bits off and replace the torso, I've also replaced the white on the wax highlights with dorn yellow, probably not noticeable but I prefer it.

Added some highlights to the armor but it's a work in progress. The bases are also now complete as I wanted a break from painting cloth. Quite a lot of detail to work on but I think the most valuable thing I've taken away is using fewer layers to achieve the paint I want, I've mixed my nuln with some storm host silver (after spilling half the pot) and this has the same effect as what I was doing - which was 3 layers of paint rather than a thin wash or two.

Finally, the radio com backpack and scoped bolt guns have been put onto the models in the tactical squad.

The Vet Vanguards (Scrapped the robed Sgt and I'm going to replace with another model - keeping the relic blade + storm shield). I've started a lot of the basic painting on the Sternguard now, with details, layers, and highlights to follow.

Cheers dude, they are getting there! I wouldn't go that far, the cloth on your Eldar is looking crisp!

Been a bit busy with work + study so not much has really happened paint-wise, I've started the detail on the Sternguard and decided to just remove the hand/gun from the iron hands bits I'm using to make the Sternguard (skulls removed obviously... The mk iii heads are now finished with visors completed (Forgeworld stuff isn't as crisp in the recesses as I'd hoped so the painting looks a bit worse on most of the FW bits, that may just be my error though rather than anything to do with the product)

Nothing else to report, for the time being, been a bit of a dull week with regards to progression on the army.

Almost everything I need to complete the Van Vets, Company Vets & Sternguard - plus the first of the Venerable Dreadnoughts turned up today. Just a pile of unpainted grey at the second, I'm looking forward to seeing how the Spellcrow chainmail looks on the marines, first time buying anything non-GW, it looks good so far!

Few Pics of the almost completed Tactical Sgt's and marines with comm's (need to touch up a few spots - especially helmets)

The chainmail has been added to various squads, loving how they look, certainly ordering another 10. I think they give the army the crusade look, despite the armor being a much more modern pattern.

Another late nite painting, a small amount of progress visually on the Sternguard but I've been working on the armor, weapons and how dull/bright things are, picking out bolts and finishing up (still a lot of highlighting to go) the arms. Another little kitbash with the demon from the GK, the hand looks a tad large but oh well, I think its a good trade-off. Starting work on the comm's model for each Sternguard now and their Sgt's. Having to do a little bit of cutting to get the Sgt's sorted. I've also started finishing up the chain swords/arms for the Van Vets.

I gave in and went to dry brushing for the demon head, I've resisted it up until this point.

Small update on the force:

- Chaplains Crozius made, still needs painting for the most part.
- Added the servo skull to the dread considering I've removed the targeting system to put wings on it.
- Played about with the positioning of the Van Vets and have removed a couple of pauldrons to be replaced by more decorative ones.
- Started work on the Sternguard Stg's, sadly I only have 1 banner for the time being.
Edit: Look how sh*t that Stg's knee/leg is! Repaint incoming!

2nd Edit: Few images of the Sternguard Sgt postures and the Vet Vanguards' new left pauldrons. (both WIP)

03/01: Tried to paint my gemstones by building layers like in the tutorials. There are literally about 20 layers of diluted red/yellow on there built up from the recommended black base coat.

10/01: Put the primer on all my little detail pieces, all ready to be painted now - should bring all the models to life with these little additions and make them 100% one of a kind! Pretty busy IRL and I've committed to this month's painting challenge so they are probably going to just sit there til next month.

A small bump, I'm calling the two com units from my sternguard done, also had a remodel of the Sgt's.

- 5 Custodes shields en-route so I can get back to my Breach/Company Vets.
- Started to order some bits for the Devastator squad.
- I'm going to scrap the idea of mk3/4 jump packs and replace them with a set from Sanguinary Guards (also gives me some nice future kitbash options with the remaining sprue).
