I got two friends who love the 40k background and would be interested in playing some 40k. Due to time and other restrictions, it will never amount to more than the smallest of games.

Hence my question: What mode of 40k is best for small games?

My initial hunch would have been kill team, its very small yet offers some decent complexity for its size. With the release of the new SM codex, the crusade on a very small points level sounds interesting as well, since it allows more variety in units.
Please note that expanding the army beyond combat patrol size is a very unlikely prospect. Thanks!

I don't see any reason to not just play all three of them.

As for the forces not expanding beyond a patrol? That's just the size of a game. It doesn't have to have anything to do with the size of ones collection....

Just to clarify: One of the said friends has severe eye-sight limitations. Handling a game of greater size than patrol is not feasible. The collection can be greater than 500p surely.

On those grounds, combat patrol and Crusade sounds best. That way you have incentive to build up larger forces, but the actual games themselves can happily stay small scale - you just have a greater choice of units to bring to them.
This also stops the games becoming a case of "oh hey look, it's my original HQ, 2 Troops and extras against your original HQ, 2 Troops and extras. *Again*."

"Hard pressed on my right. My centre is yielding. Impossible to manoeuvre. Situation excellent. I am attacking." - General Ferdinand Foch
