Does this work?

Patriarch cast smite on enemy unit, they remove one regular model. Patriarch uses familiar to cast mental onslaught, the spell where you test leadership until they roll a 6, winn the leadership comparison or the model is dead. If they do take a wound they need to deal one wound to the unit. But if I mental onslaught a special weapon and a regular model took the wound from the smite they would need to deal damage to regular models first?

Would this also work if they are a multi wound unit and one of them have a wound on them from before?

No, if you mental onslaught the Special Weapon guy, and no other wounded models are in the unit, your enemy can choose to kill off the Special Weapon guy and end the Mental Onslaught. The rule about assigning wounds to already wounded models only applies to multi-wound model units because units with only 1W models can't possibly have wounded models in the unit.

For Multi-Wound model units, it does work the way you want. If you Smite a unit of Tacticool Marines, and a Bolter mook takes the wound, then you Mental Onslaught the Plasmagun guy, if you cause a mortal wound, the bolter mook has to take the first wound, then your opponent can choose to have the next two mortal wounds hit the Plasmagun guy and kill him off to end the Mental Onslaught.

"3. ALLOCATE ATTACK
If an attack successfully wounds the target unit, the player
commanding the target unit allocates that attack to one model in
the target unit (this can be to any model in the unit and does not
have to be allocated to a model that is within range of, or visible to,
the attacking model). If a model in the target unit has already lost
any wounds or has already had attacks allocated to it this phase, the
attack must be allocated to that model."

Yeah I was confusing this with alocating attack rule. Never mind.
