I'm new to 40K and I purchased the Indomitus box and split it with my friend. I posted my Ultramarines separately seeking advice on a competitive 1000 Pts build. With this post I'm trying to help my friend build out a <=1000 Pts army based on the Necrons from the box and additional models he's acquired since.
Indomitus Box Necrons (szarekh dynasty)
Necron Warriors (20) (50:50 Gaussers and Flayers)
Overlord
Royal Warden
Plasmancer
Cryptothralls (2)
Skorpekh Lord
Skorpekh Destroyers (3)
Plasmacyte
Canoptek Reanimator
Canoptek Scarab Swarms (6)
Additional Models Acquired
Illuminor szeras
Canoptek wraiths (3)
Triarch Praetorians (5)
C'Tan of the Void Dragon
He knows he can't include them all in the list. He wants to know what he should keep/drop/acquire to make a competitive 1000 Pts army to go up against my Ultramarines (build in progress).
I would use the Void Dragon and Skorpekh Destroyers and tell your friend to use the whirling onslaught and entropic strike stratagems when needed and he will do fine. I also make Necron videos he can click in my signature to learn how to use other units.

Interesting...any advice about the other battlefield roles to make a legal Battalion sized detachment? Thanks.
You need 3 troop choices and I just made a video on Immortals, and I have a video on Warriors as well if you would like to see how they work. It depends on your playstyle I don't want you to buy something that doesn't match your aggression level. Play 2 more games and see if you like to be aggressive or passive. Aggressive means you go after your opponent passive means you let them come to you.
Your friend needs to decide how committed he is to szeras.
This really will determine his build as szeras costs a lot of points as such he is best if you build around him to make the most of the investment.
With that in mind your friend will want more core choices ideally Warriors as you get the largest net benefit from szeras. He could also include lychguard and tomb blades in a szeras build

Thanks! I'll check out your video. I appreciate the info.

This is interesting advice...can you suggest any lists which are centered around this character?

Thanks, we've played about 10 games with these units - I would say my friend is on the "aggressive" side. That being said, how would you flesh out troop choices in a 1000 Pts list focused around Illuminor Szeras? Here's what my friend was considering:
