A quick backstory for this post. A buddy and me have gathered about 8 armies for a fun little tournament we are going to play. Each army is 500pts, with no unit being more than 250pts and no model with more than 10. Immediately you can see the dilemma. Guard at low points dont do so well, and when they do it's because they have Leman Russes and Hellhounds. Both have been nixed. So I'm coming to you the people to help me sort out a good list to take against all comers, cause once we start the lists won't change. Here's what I have put together so far.

Lord Commissar w/ Powerfist and Plasma Pistol
Infantry w/Bolter Srgt and Plasma Gun
Platoon Commander w/ Bolter and Powersword
Techpriest
3 Armored Sentinels w/ HKs and Missile Launchers
HWT w/ Missile Launchers
Chimera w/ 2 Heavy Bolters

Regiment is Armageddon Steel Legion
I own a healthy amount of Guard, with exceptions to no real Auxilia units. We start 11/9/2020

No offence Bro what world are you living in? xD Guard excel at low points... boys before toys; get bodies; and sentinels, command squads, heavy weapons teams, special weapons teams... keep em cheap n cheerful, we get loads more utility than other factions for low points games!

Let us know how it goes? Ditch the expensive toys and take a second swing at the list of you’ve got an extensive collection?

1. he is TOTALLY correct. Unless your playstyle is very anti-horde, that's realistically very strong option in low points games. If you don't want that, I offer an alternative idea.

Alternately, remember taurox are only 10 wounds and not terrible in low points games -- get there fast, fire autocannon.
Taurox prime in LL hands even better.
tempestor prime (50 points him + wargear)
5 scions with 2 plasma guns
5 other scions 2 melta guns
scions command sqaud with 4 melta guns
2 taurox prime with gatling cannon and 2 volleyguns each

would be 500 points on the nose, and LL stuff gets bonus reroll 1's, 5++ shields, and the weapons ALL have ap-1 extra, (melee or shooty). Sure, its not a lot of bodies, but you have some quality shooting there, and you can drop, or transport, or footslog, as you see fit.

Welp... I thought I was a good Guard player XD. While I do have Scions, they're built for Iotan Dragons, deepstrike in and light the enemy up with plasma. As for Tauroxs (of any flavor), I dont own any of those. Never cared for them. Guess my play style has always been Mechanized. If my infantry doesn't have a ride, they're vulnerable. Only pop out when ready and in position. However, I am hearing what you guys are saying...

C.C. w/ Bolter + Power sword
C.C. w/ Bolter
Infantry w/ Bolter Srgt, plasma gun, vox caster x2
3 Armored Sentinels w/ Missile Launchers + HK
HWT w/ Missile Launchers x2

Still Steel Legion (kinda my regiment of choice), Old Grudges and Laurels of Command on Warlord. Definitly filling up the board at that point.

A bit more filler for what we're building for.

8 armies have been decided

Grey Knights
Genestealer Cults (Rusted Cog I think)
Guard (in some flavor or another)
Necrons (Nephrek)
Orks (Blood Axes)
Space Marines (Salamanders)
Tau (Farsight Enclaves)
Tyranids (Kraken)

We are also not taking any special characters, didn't mention that before. All the preliminary list have been made, but alterations have also been done for almost every list.

Another list for Guard could actually be straight Tempestus

Stormtrooper Captain x2
Stormtroopers w/ 4 plasma guns and plasma pistol x3

That's 500 on the nose. Run as Dragons for that extra range on shooting. Also 4+ on overwatch (though that's 2 CPs right there)

Addendum to the above stormtrooper list:
After reading the comment about Scions, I think I'm sold on the Lambda Lions. I'll likely keep my Dragons for when I pair them with the Steel Legion (the synergy is just to good for me to ignore) but for this series of games... it just might be what is needed for a chance to win with the Guard.

Of course I have to choose the army before he does. Before we play a round we roll off to see who chooses what army. Bonus for winning is choosing an army that you're comfortable with, bonus for losing is you can choose an army that could have a natural advantage to the one you're playing against. Winning armies get set to the side for the next bracket, an we continue until final victory.

Yeah, you can pretty much pack a standard grade army case full with around 500 - 700 pts of models.

One has to wonder. Do the Tyranids consider drop-assault troops... fast food?

2x company commander

6x infantry

2x hws-mortar

Astropath

497 points 69 models

Could swap the hws and astro for Sentinels or special weapons, but I'd feel pretty confident i could swamp the board with this army and win on points.

So I confess I would put a grenade launcher and a heavy bolter in each squad, before I would invest in the mortars.
They ARE bodies, but they are not very effective against a lot of the guys you may face. 18 shots heavy bolter + 6 shots krak x old grudges x astropath strips cover and throws malstrom is a real threat to any stray tank that shows up or other midrange armor asset
Conversely, 6d6 frag + 18 shots heavy bolter will threaten a small horde nicely, out at a range where the small horde hasn't hit you just yet in melee.
Against marines, a lucky round of rolling, creative use of old grudges, and stripped cover by the astropath, and you might kill six marines in a turn with that firepower. And a few more with lasguns.
That's like 1/3 of the enemy's total forces in this game size.

I thank everyone for their posts on this. I'll be making a post later on with a link to the video we will be making on the armies being used and first game.

I honestly don't have much in the way of heavy weapons for my Guard, I've always built them to be mobile and heavy weapons never seemed worth it when I'd be hitting on 5+'s. Which is another reason why I put a lot of points into chimeras, sentinels, and lemans. My current 2k list is mechanized infantry with leman russ support. I do run a squad of vets in a Vendetta to assault forward and fire plasma and a heavy flamer. with CP spending they can put out some good firepower with decent AP. All in all, I don't run blob Guard or HWTs. With my Armageddon tactics my vehicles are a bit tougher, forcing my opponent to dedicate heavy firepower for even my light vehicles. Mech Infantry isn't great in 9th, but Armageddon actually gives them a good name. 9th is much better than 8th though, no more Neg 1 for vehicle heavy weapons.

Nice scions 3 squads but consider also that you can do six smaller squads just as easily, and have better board control in some ways.

You have a very good point. I'll just have to make use of what I have.
