Subject: When is a 1 a 1, but a 2 a 3? (Plasma & +1 to hit)

So I have a unit of SW Terminators, armed with combi-plasmas & SSs. In my shooting phase I pop Fury of the First for +1 to hit, and fire some overcharged plasma shots.
The wording on plasma now is that it's UNMODIFIED 1's that cause the bearer to be slain. So, I roll a few 1's. With the +1 to hit these are bumped up to a 2, a fail, but a safe fail, right? Ie, it is impossible for me to overheat while under the effects of a +1 to hit, as the 1's are MODIFIED to 2's. If not, why.
Along the same vein, when that same unit suffers return fire from, say, lasguns, (no -ap) they have a 2+ Sv with a +1 from the SS. Using the same logic from the above example, I roll a few 1's for saves. These are then bumped up to 2's, and thus a successful save, right? If not, why.
I'll add in the caveat that I am aware of the difference between a 1+ save and a 2+ with a +1 bonus, this is not that question.
I guess my main question is this; is an unmodified 1 un-modifiable, but everything else is? Eg, naturally-rolled 1's stay as 1's but 2's turn to 3's, 3's to 4's and so on, or are there occasional circumstances where it's impossible to roll a 1 as the final result?
I'm probably being extremely blind and just keep missing the relevant paragraph in the book, please humour me!
Many thanks in advance

This was true in 8th, but its longer true in 9th. Pg. 200 says : Unmodified dice : Result of roll after re-rolls, but before modifiers (if any). If you roll a natural 1, you blow up, even with +1 to hit. OTOH, you dont blow up if you roll a natural 2, with -1 to hit.

Because an unmodified roll of 1 always fails. Pg. 221. Unmodified refers to the number on the dice which you actually rolled.

Many thanks for the quick reply, much appreciated, clears that up nicely.
So actually I'd be safer utilising a Captain's re-roll 1's aura or Wisdom of the Ancients strat in that case. Cheers!

Yes, you need an ability which allows you to reroll 1s. But if you roll a 1 again, you still blow up.
