I'm being gifted my uncles double action Paasche and will need a compressor to match it.

what are your recommendations P+M?

P.S. I can't wait since it's been 20ish years since I've used an airbrush. Hopefully I really learned a thing or two in college about color theory & can apply it.

I used to use a cheap Mastercraft compressor from Canadian Tire, but it's heavy and loud as hell, so I bought a Master Model TC-40T from Amazon. It is lighter, much quieter, and doesn't need an adapter for the hose.

What do you mean by moderately priced?
Get a quiet one, less than 50dB. Get one that has a tank.

Most of the compressors are based on one design, the AS186; There's not going to be much difference to them.

I'm not looking to drop $4-500 on one, just don't want to cheap out.

in the +/-$250 range is where I'm comfortable.

You can try a company called "Harbor freight" for a compressor that won't kill your wallet.

You might get a good working one.

But be advised that the nickname for harbor freight is "hazard fraught" as their products are not know for high quality.

Still i bought a decent light duty cordless drill from then and am still physically unharmed by it after some light use. Sometimes some decent quality and acceptably safe product have been known to pass thru that chain.

I've heard 'Harbor Fright'. But my Harbor Freight compressor- which for $80 came with an airbrush, too- is still kicking after about ten years of use.

Is it particularly good? Nah. But a compressor doesn't need to be fancy- as long as the moisture trap works and it delivers pressure, it'll do the trick. Get a long hose to buffer the air transfer and you even get rid of the 'pulsing' effect common to tankless compressors.

I do not recommend any of the tankless air compressors. The nice thing about a getting a larger one from Harbor Freight is it has a good size tank and can get the PSI high enough to air up your tires, blow out the garage or power your nail gun.

Ha! I never heard "Harbor fright" before, good one, some of the stuff they sell there can be a little scary looking.

I'm surprised to see their stuff getting any good reviews here. I wasn't expecting that given the horror stories I've heard about them.

Spoiler:

I will say something, I bought an 8" rambo knife there for emergency use, as is sudden intruder. It turns out that knife has become kind of an underground thing. It's so cheap it's attracted a following, with multiple youtube videos dedicated to reviews, suggested improvements, etc. Plus a few "DO NOT BUY THIS! SEVERE INJURY POSSIBLE!" vids.

One guy said it wasn't in the top 10 knives he'd want to depend on, or even in the top 100, but for 8$ you were not getting cheated.

What the hell, it's probably as good as the standard knife your average IG recruit gets issued.

The main negative to those is if you plan to have it in your house (not out in the garage running a line to it) they can be bloody noisy. So I own both a quiet hobby compressor for airbrushing that lives in my hobby room, and noisy garage compressor that lives in the workshop and is loud enough to require hearing protection and could be used to spray paint a car.

But yeah, get something with a tank either way, I think my hobby compressor is 1/6hp and about 20LPM, if I were buying another, that would be the absolute minimum.

luckily I have a garage and am not opposed to a tanked one, I just like not having a loud ass compressor going off randomly. worked in a motorcycle shop and got tired of the compressor quickly.

I use electric for my car & motorcycle stuff now so I do not need to have something high flowing anymore. just want a quality one without spending a bunch of $$$

If the noise and size doesn't bother you but you don't like it going off randomly, something with a couple of horsepower and a 50 or so litre tank will mean you can probably turn it off after the tank is full, run off the tank for a while and turn it on manually when the pressure goes down rather than letting it turn back on automatically.

The regulator on my garage compressor isn't fine enough for airbrushing, if you get one that's similar to mine you'll probably want an additional regulator.

This was my first compressor. Not too expensive and does the job, has a tank and moisture trap.
