Hello! I've just started playing again after 15 or so years and have some questions about how I work out my armies points..

Trying to work this out with the chaos codex, rulebook and battlescribe, but alas I am confused.

Taking an aspiring champion as an example, my squad of 5 chaos marines has 4 normal marines and 1 aspiring champion which I assume is the compulsory minimum? Does the aspiring champion have an additional points value? I can't find a points value for him anywhere, and the index just says chaos space marines (13pts). So does the aforementioned 5 man squad cost 5x13pts = 65 points which includes 4 marines and a champion which is the base minimum?

Confusion arose when I was using battescribe, which doesn't seem to list any of the leader choices from the codex, characters or otherwise. It does however under the "Team leader" option have aspiring champion - 28pts.

With very few exceptions (Wolf Guard Pack Leaders spring to mind) "Sergeant" models cost the same as a normal line trooper. Where a Sergeant costs differently, it will be explicitly spelled out.

Also keep in mind the points costs in the codex are not accurate, you need Chapter Approved 2020 for the latest points costs (or use battlescribe). CSM are now 14PPM.

The 5x14=70 points is the base cost for JUST the bodies. Any wargear on those models must be paid for separately. Luckily the base Boltgun and Bolt Pistol are 0 points each anyway. If you give one of the dudes a Plasma Gun, don't pay the 0 points for the Boltgun (as you don't have it) and pay 10 points for the Plasma Gun.

Or for a more helpful example: A Helbrute costs 70pt base, +20 for the Fist and +25 for the Multi Melta for a total of 115 points. If I swap the Fist for a Hammer, and the Multimelta for a Twin Lascannon, I only pay the points for the Hammer and Lascannon, and not the Fist and Multimelta, for a final cost of 70+30+40=140 points.

Are you sure you have the correct Battlescribe data? For me it shows an Aspiring Chamption at 14 points. You want Warhammer 40,000 v9.1.4.
