For removing the supports - clippers, hobby knife, occasional brute force, and fine sandpaper.
I sculpt in zBrush, but that's a bit of a cash outlay. If you're looking for a cheap option, Blender is probably the best, but it does have a bit of a learning curve. Most 3d programs are going to require you to spend some time with tutorials learning your way around... you're not going to find a program that you can just install and immediately start making models if you're new to it.

Hexagon is a pretty good free modeling app and it's pretty easy to learn. While I've not made anything myself yet I think the best way to learn and get used to it is to find a model you like and play around with altering it in different ways.

I would learn Zbrush. Blender is a toy compared to Zbrush. Once you master Zbrush it will do more for you and make your sculpting actually work for you instead of fighting the program to sculpt what you want. In addition Pixologic, the creators of Zbrush offer hundreds of free classes through the Pixologic Classroom. Compared to Youtube tutorials by randoms online picking up Zbrush is far more accessible for first-timers. There are many reasons why blender isn't considered an industry standard. It's free sure.. But you get what you pay for.
