Can I include chaos knights in a CSM army and still be battle forged, or how does that work? Or are chaos knights supposed to be a stand alone army?

How do key words work? Can they have the creations of bile key word (but not the trait)?

Yeah, just in a separate detachment.

My understanding is that to be battle-forged, there needs to be a faction keyword unifying each detachment in the army - which in this case would be CHAOS.

Within an individual detachment though, you can't use the top-level CHAOS keyword, there needs to be an additional common faction keyword unifying the detachment - e.g. CHAOS KNIGHTS, or HERETIC ASTARTES, or DAEMON...

But I have to spend command points on order to get an extra detachments?

Yeah, it'll cost you CPs. You don't get to soup different codexes together for free any more.

Ok that’s what I wasn’t sure about because there’s only about 5 models for knights and I’m wasn’t sure if it was more of an add on than soup

While there ARE only a couple datasheets for Chaos Knights, it is balanced out by being more flexible than is available to Imperial Knights. Arguably, there are more options available to Chaos than the imperium on account of the fact that Despoilers can take Double Ranged Weapon options. Generally though, I don't have any issue with 6 Helverins and a big bad fire magnet. And that allows me to still include a Patrol Detachment of Chaos as well.

So if I want to add a bit of fire power to a CSM army using knights what would you recommend? A couple of wardogs?

you can get up to 9 War Dogs for 3 CPs (though if you do you probably won't have points for anything else). Personally, I prefer the Autocannons to the CC variant, which while an additional 20 points per model has better than twice the effective range (72" v30") and not being blast, is useable in melee as well.
But it's up to you. CSM has those daemon engines for a roughly equivalent point cost so it could come down to personal preference.
