Hi guys!

Just a question about what is expected in tournaments regarding the ruling of FW’s “suggested” pairings between the FW chapters and the founding chapters. e.g. FW suggests that Red Scorpions be run as Ultras. I’d assumed that was just a suggestion and purely optional (like rolling randomly to determine warlord traits). But I recently read an article online (from one of the generally more reliable sites) that seemed to assume that TOs will enforce that FW chapters be used as successors of the recommended parent chapter.

Is that the impression that other people are getting too? Or do you think most TOs will allow those chapters to ignore the FW suggestion and choose their own parent chapter? Obviously anyone with experience as a TO would be really valuable, but anyone who’s got a bit of a finger on the pulse of the tournament scene (I’m in Aus but we were often in line with US and potentially UK rulings and played ITC until 9th) your insight would also be appreciated.

Thanks heaps guys,
Will

By the rules, they are only suggestions - there's a lot of "we recommend" verbiage on that page. If a TO wants to house rule otherwise, then you'll have to check with that TO before the event.

This. No matter what we say here, the tournament organizer may see it differently.

I agree with what everyone else said. If you care about tournament play, I suggest you go with GW's suggestions on Founding Chapter and Successor Chapter Traits. Otherwise, you risk your carefully planned list centered around FW Chapter X Character being invalidated at some random tournament you attend because they interpret the suggestion to be the ruling from GW.

On the other hand, you could always call your chapter by a different name and just say they happen to use the same iconography and colouring as the Red Scorpions. The galaxy is such a big place and the Imperial beaurocracy is so byzantine that it could easily happen.

Warhammer World has rules for their events that if your army is painted as a specific chapter, then they must be played as such (e.g., an army painted as White Scars must be played as White Scars). Again, check with the tournament organizer if in doubt.

Not if you want to use a Red Scropions unit in your army.

Both fair points. Guess it all boils down to: check with the TO, and assume that you should use the recommended traits.
