I got a squat of plague marines to go in my creations of bile army and I’m wondering if they work better as a gun line or close combat, seeing as GW give you options

Well, both?
I had success with small units with 2 blight launchers and 1 plasma as well as CC-oriented troops. Though in a creations of Bile army I think they'd lack the support they have in DG. So I'd suggest:
1. Wait for the DG codex and hopefully an FAQ that changes PM stats for CSM accordingly
2. shooting squad seems better in CSM because it doesn't need support that much. Put them on an objective and have fun.
3. This thread should probably belong to the Tactics Forum.

Plague Marines can do either. They can be equipped for ranged, melee, or in the middle. You design the unit for the job you want it to do.

Ranged, you can outfit it with plasma, or melta, or plague belchers with a bunch of bolters.

Melee, you can kit out two guys with flails or heavy axes, two guys with regular axes, and the rest with double plague knives. sergeant can take a power fist.

It really depends on what you want the unit to do.

When I run Plague Marines it’s usually as fire support but if they are getting the Space Marine treatment - I’ll be running them as both fire and assault setups.

In generality they like to close distance, fire and then crack skulls once there while being shot the whole way in and surviving. That is their tactics in a nut shell. As with any tactic support is key for however you want to use them so that may change how you decide to run them.

Based on the Community articles before Xmas, I'd play them as a mid-table objective holding unit as they have a good range of 24" weapons and are a pain to shift with shooting or CC.

I played Nurgle in the 7th edition and they were incredible at CC. Chainswords gave each mini 2 attacks (3 on charge) with T5 and a 3+ save with 4+ feel no pain reroll. The unit was damn near impossible to kill without power weapons or equivalent. Sadly, they seem to have been nerfed somewhat with the addition of AP altering the save roll (probably for the best), but I'd be willing to give them a crack in CC.
