Tau defense turrets are weird. They have a stat line, but no keywords. The codex says that drones are assumed to have the same battlefield role as the unit they deploy with, with the exception of having objective secured. With that in mind, do turrets count for holding objectives, or objective secured? Like if your opponent has 5 troops on an objective, and you have 5 troops plus your turret, do you have the point?

If you're talking about the DS8 Tactical Support Turret Breachers and Strike Teams have, they aren't Drones in any way, shape, or form. They are just another model in the unit (albeit one that doesn't start the battle existing) and has the exact same keywords and abilities as the rest of the Fire Warriors in the unit. They aren't covered by the "Drone" section of the Keywords or "Drone" section of the Abilities.

As such, a DS8 Tactical Support Turret in a Breacher Team or Strike Team will be the the battlefield role of the unit it is in, namely Troops.
