This is probably an obvious answer, but here goes:

- Can I simply take a Lord of Change as an HQ choice in a Thousand Sons list, or do I have to take an Aux or Patrol detachment? Both forces share the Chaos and Tzeench faction keywords.

This is my first army since 7th Ed where I may be mixing forces in this manner, so some clarification would be appreciated.

You can, but you shouldn't.

You can make a TZEENTCH keyword detachment, but it won't receive any detachment bonuses, as it is neither a THOUSAND SONS or TZEENTCH DAEMON detachment. If you want to run Thousand Sons and Daemons, you're better off isolating each into their own Detachments so each detachment gets a bonus.

You can do this because the army as a whole will share the CHAOS keyword, even though you can't use CHAOS to bind an individual detachment.
