Your old schemes look just fine; I'd use them as a base and get the new recruits (hatches?) up to that level, then go back and spend time prettifying any models / units you find particularly fun to work on.

I'm in a somewhat similar process myself right now, adding some models to a unit from 2003 and trying to decide between touching up the vets to my current level or just having a mixed unit with some that look better than others.

Army Painter Dark Tone is the closest equivalent to old Badab Black on the market. And grab some Strong Tone while you're at it, if you miss Devlan Mud.
