Hey yall. Long time lurker here. Recently got back to playing 40k as covid basically has stopped me from playing for a year now. My past few lists have had minimal success due to the 9th edition changes so I thought I would rework them and try out something a bit more "competitive" but still fluffy, as I do like my snakebites. Not a fan of the ghaz skarboy spam, as I've never realy liked ghaz's models and that new one just irks me for some reason. They would probably have been the best choice for a "greentide" but I'm going to see if I can make something work without them.
This is what I've settled on for them. Had a few alternative lists that had mek guns instead of tankbustas and more deepstrike units but I think this is the best compromise on killing power, staying power, and mobility.
I'm not sure if there would be another way to make this list that would utilize the snakebite bonuses and stratagems more, other than "spam squiggoths" that is. Any ideas on the subject would be appreciated.
I was also inspired to try and make a feral orks list, as they are pretty similar to snakebites (though even more primitive) and their bonuses are a bit better at getting a large horde into combat quickly, which is the feel I was trying to emulate. However, after doing some math, it was clear that evil suns were by far the superior choice, as they basically have a +2 to movement and a bonus of +1 to charge. While I'm sure that 6" pile in would be nice for getting many boys into the fight, getting more bodies in is kinda pointless if you cant even make the charge.
I believe this list is far more competitive than the above snakebite list and might be the way to go.
I prefer list 1. Remove the battlewagon though, tellyporting the meganobz is much better. Reduce the meganobz to 5 to avoid blasts bonus against them and coherency limitations. With the spared point field as many Smasha Gunz you can fit. A nob with waaagh banner could be useful as well and it definitely matches the army theme.
I'd also cut the trukk, outflanking the tankbustas seems a much better option as the trukk will be target priority. Max bomb squigs with the spared points.
Alright, I'll try that out this weekend. Tellyporting the nobz does make a bit more sense, though I'm worried about the boys being more of a target for shooting without the threat of the battlewagon to distract people.
Battlewagon and boyz attract different kinds of weapons. Anything that actually hurts a battlewagon is extremely inefficient against boyz. Forcing the opponent to fire meltas, plasmas, etc towards boyz is a great result for you.
Just finished a match against Eldar with the changes you suggested. Got absolutely demolished.
The 15 shining spears managed to fly over everything and shoot up all my infantry that were in cover, the dire avengers shot up one of my 30 boy squads to and the Lynx killed off 2 of my mek guns. At the end of first turn shooting, I had already lost half my army, even with the KFF protection. Tankbustas managed to make a bunch of hits on one of the spear squads but due to spells and warlord traits, all 10 of the shots were saved by a 2+ invuln.
Managed to pull things back a bit and kill off the spears that charged me and tellyport in the meganobs to kill the lynx and wraithseer but they then got smite spammed and killed off by dark reapers.
Shadow specters and wraithguard came in from the flanks on his second turn and managed to widdle down my boys even more.
At the end, I was on the defensive most of the game and spent the remaining turns just fighting and killing all the small units that had quickly advanced on me and my opponent was able to win big on primaries and thin their ranks.
Think this loss was primarily due to me not being prepared for the sheer volume of fire the spears and them avoiding all the cover on the map due to the 16" move and double move to due spells. Got tied down and was just subservient to my opponent's will.
I need to find a way to avoid this happening again, though I'm not sure its a list thing and more of a strategy thing.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I have to say though, looking back I did manage to fix up the situation a lot. Probably would not have been able to do that without the mek guns
