Is Grav weaponry a better choice now against Dark Angels Terminators than Plasma, given that they'll both be wounding on 2s, but Grav is multidamage against that target group 2+ saves with no chance of blowing up?

Because at that point I don't see any sort of downside between the two, they both wound on the same, the AP is the same (unless talking Hellblasters...)

Taking Devastators into consideration, using Grav Cannons they'll have 16 shots for 135 points, (assuming Armorium Cherub) 12 shots at BS 3+ and 4 at BS2+ meaning they can reliably get (8+ 3.28) 11.28 hits, those will result in 5.64 wounds after Inner Circle/Transhuman takes it toll. assuming they have storm shields they'll be saving on 4+ either way so it'll be 2.82 wounds that make it through. Rounding that to 3 you kill 1 and wound another for 2 wounds. You net about 55 points of damage against the Dark Angels Terminators, so doing this 3 times pays off the unit.

If you expend the Cherub for the first round of shooting its 20 shots, (8+6.58) for 14.56 hits, 7 wounds 3.64 failed saves which if we apply the round rule I used above would result in 2 dead Deathwing, for a net of 66 points worth of damage and the added utility of potentially cutting out the storm shields from mixed squads. Not the best output but these may not be optimal weaponry.

you wouldnt be wounding on 2's, but yes, grav is better than plasma against marines.

Plasma just tends to have more mobility (inceptors).

Grav vs plasma is a weird comparison. I tend to see grav compared to heavy bolters.

Between the options I prefer grav. More shots, good str and ap, but you need to get closer which can be a problem.

I meant to type 4/s as I was considering them against a Deathwing squad.

But from what I'm seeing it almost seems like Grav is the way to go against Marines. Which is odd as the majority of SM player's I've seen use plasma

The extra S from plasma makes it more versatile vs. a larger number of targets.

Generally I feel the order of usefulness is basic plasma -> grav -> overcharged plasma. So if you have something to mitigate the get’s hot, just roll with plasma and vaporize things. But if you are away from RR support, grav does a good job, and is safer.

But that’s mostly just for killing marines. Once you start looking at tougher targets, plasma starts pulling ahead.

I've run lots of grav devastators, hellblasters and plasma inceptors in various lists recently and find the grav cannons very reliable against all but the heaviest targets.

Agree with Nevelon in terms of order of usefulness, but with the caveat that I think if taking plasma without overcharging doesn't make sense, then don't take it.

I've found two squads of grav devastators, combi-melta or plasma on the sergeants and an amorium cherub slamming down mid-board in a drop-pod is a great area denial tactic that brings a ton of hurt
