For those who read my goals for 2021, it is no surprise that I am working on an Early Republican Roman force to use with the upcoming Wars of the Republic ruleset from Osprey. I believe they are set to be published in November of 2021. So far, I have been playtesting the rules using my famous Paper Templates, but for the release this year I will want a much better looking army so I can help advertise the game with Batreps and the like. Therefore, I need to get a usable army up and running by September or so.
I started documenting my progress on the Blog with some discussion about the Wars of the Republic ruleset....

Here is where it all started....
and here is where I am at currently....

I have another update up on the blog. However, I have the first troops done!
Some very early Roman skirmishers, so early they are not even proper Velites. Just some guys with Javelins.
I also did some work on the main infantry lines, but still have a ways to go.
You can read the details and see the progress on the blog.....

I think the end result will be a bit smaller than your force Yarkshire!
I am still plugging away on this army! It is down to the Triarri now.

Cool looking mid-Romans! You must have a sizeable force by now.

When all is said and done I will have about 160 Romans for Velites to Triarri for Early, Mid, and Late Republic.
The only thing I will be missing will be Cavalry. Not sure how I want to approach that yet, but I think I will eventually want about 20 Republican Cavalry. I am not 100% sold on the Victrix ones, but am unsure who I want to use that will look good with the rest of my Victrix force.
Any ideas?

Not really as it can be a bit too jarring to mix manufacturers when the force is so cohesive. Maybe Foundry are worth a look? Though I think you said you didn't like metal?

Gripping Beast has Late Roman light and heavy cavalry kits as well Roman cataphracts. If those don’t fit in with the Victrix infantry you could consider Gripping Beast Goth cavalry as an auxiliary detachment.

Goths, Iberian, Numidian or Gaullic cavalry will work great for my Late Republic. They might do in a pinch for Mid as well.
However, for Early I think I need Roman Equestrians. I will look into Gripping Beasts range. I was eyeing it up for a different project all ready, so now I have a reason for a closer look.

Very nice! I like the mix of colours you have used with their clothing, definitely makes them stand out. And like you say probably fits the setting a bit better than having them too uniform.

I think I have all my Republican Romans done...... for now.
Here is the last entry about them until I get some cavalry. I am not 100% convinced by the Victrix cavalry for the Republican Romans, so am open to some suggestions on adding those units. Got some?
