I feel there should be some kind of bonus when shooting an enemy within 6" or less. Basically a point-blank shot should have less of a chance to miss imo. I guess +1 to BS is too much to ask but perhaps adding an extra hit roll or something like a twin-linked bonus i.e.- re-rolls to hit. Maybe no penalty to hit for assault weapons idk what do you guys think?

The bonus is the almost guaranteed charge after shooting, followed by melee. Or bonus shooting on RF weapons.
Shooting is already strong enough.

As a guard player I'm pretty happy with Rapid Fire at 12", and a regiment trait that can push it out to 18.

Reroll hits is more powerful than +1 BS when you hit on a 3+, 4+, and 5+.
And I do not think this kind of thing should be a universal rule. If you wanted to bring back range bands (from... 2nd edition? I think) that'd work, but have to be tailored to each weapon. But a universal +1 BS or reroll hits at 6" or less... Nah.

Maybe ignore all cover mods to hit at 6" as you're close enough to see thru the cover?

That might be interesting. In general, however, I'm not sure I'm a fan of increasing the lethality of the game. It's not that uncommon for marines to get within 6" of you (intending to charge or steal an objective) before shooting. You'd be giving them and other short range shooting armies a boost for doing what they were already going to do anyway. And armies that don't want to get within 6" and shoot you (because they'd rather keep their distance or simply don't have guns) wouldn't benefit from this rule to the same degree other armies would.
You could look at going the other way and inflicting a to-hit penalty for shooting attacks made beyond a certain distance, but the lack of to-hit stacking means that that would render some chapter tactics redundant and also remove incentives to not move and shooty heavy weapons, shoot after advancing, etc.

ATTENTION. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

I guess +1 to WS is too much to ask but perhaps adding an extra hit roll or something like a second weapon bonus i.e.- re-rolls to hit. Maybe no penalty to hit for power weapons idk what do you guys think?

if 6 inches equates to around 6 feet or so, then I say no bonus. Most muggings and stickups occur at 6 feet or less, and even a trained combat specialist supercool tactical operator is going to not be able to make snap judgements as it regards accuracy in a lightning fast combat environment under 6 feet, on the contrary, aim should be improved by having more distance, as it gives you more time to aim.
The only thing I could see changing due to proximity is shotguns, which no one really uses, and has a proximity based rule.
If we are playing the distance game, I would never toss a live grenade at a target within a short walks distance from me. which is what frag grenades are.

At 28mm scale, 1 inch is more like about 5.5 feet. So 6 inches would be closer to 33 feet. (or about 10 metres for the metric persons). Certainly not that close really.

Thank you for the math! I think you are slightly off, as that would make Guardsmen about 8-9 feet tall. as they are about 1.5 inches tall. That would make Custodes 12' tall and a Sentinel about 18-20' tall. The wiki says they are exactly 5.5 meters tall(18'), so that would make an inch almost exactly 6'. Which means all models are scaled wrong. So model scaling is out. If we go by just sheer bodies, it' about 4 dead guardsmen to 6". I think we can effectively measure distance in Dead Guardsmen. That might be the best metric for 40k. Your bolter can fire 16 dead guardsmen, and has a RF range of 8 dead guardsmen.

The models are not the same scale as the table/battlefield (the ground scale). Way back in Rogue Trader they actually had commentary on this (on page 6). Basically the ground scale was set at 1" = 2 meters. Each model is a single human/alien/vehicle/whatever, and some commentary that 'unlike most wargames,' range and effectiveness is based on single shots rather than unit vs unit. "For this reasons, the ranges and effectiveness of Warhammer 40,000 weapons may seem comparatively low, but we believe that this is reasonably accurate and it does give a better game"
AFAIK, they never really reassessed this decision. In most ways the doubled down on the abstraction of the game, so it hardly matters.

Yeah, I've always thought of the scale as being roughly comparable to D&D. Each inch is more or less a 5 ft. square.

Yeah you're right, I'm a bit off, didn't actually measure a guardsman and went from memory, so about 4.5-5 ft seems closer to scale for 1". But then scale is all over the place in the models anyway, so its not really a hard and fast thing!
