Eye of Terror

Cotton puffs have worked for me in the past. Wad them together, include an LED light, dip them in ink, all sorts of ways to make them work.

What specific smell are you trying to model?

A haunting Slaaneshi musk coming from who knows where on the battlefield, something to give objectives on a Slaaneshi Daemon World more character.

I will be honest and say it's not something I plan on making, just thought it'd be an interesting discussion. I've seen the cotton thing done with smoke, have you tried it with pink or green?

Eye of Terror

Yeah, I've soaked cotton balls in thinned ink to create effects with all kinds of colors. I twisted up some steel wire to make barbed wire scenery ones and the base was dyed cotton balls glued to thin cardboard, which looked really good.

What I haven't tried, but have thought about, is dying the cotton balls, stretching out the fibers, and using a thinned PVC glue to give it some shape.

One of the great things about cotton is those fibers are so thick. You can stretch it out and it will hold some shape, you can wet it down and it won't bunch up.

Something like that might be perfect for what you are trying to do.
