Subject: Question: Has anyone used a Conversion of Dominion (Necron Fortification Network)

Not counting You Tube videos & such, has anyone used a Conversion of Dominion (the Necron Fortification Network)? As in payed points & CP for it, not just as cool techno-scenery.
Played against it?
Or even seen it used?
In my area no one in 3 shops has seen such as of yet.
And as I look at the unit? My overwhelming thought is that whatever the style of game the $, the pts/PL, & the CP would all be better spent on virtually anything else in my codex....

Before the second lockdown hit, I saw one guy using it in a game against Space Marines. IIRC his opinion was to not use them in the future anymore, as they don't do anything for his game plan.
Command Benefits: +1 Command point if every unit in this Detachment is from the same Faction and that Faction is the same as your WARLORD’s Detachment.
You don't have to pay CP for it.

You do if you somehow have something in one of the other 2 fortification slots that not the same faction, or if the detachments somehow not the same faction as your Warlord....

You can't really claim that as a downside when you're not sure how it'd be a downside in the first place.
I'm not a Necron player but have read over the book, and I agree that it does appear a little bit useless. On second examination however, they have their uses. +2Ld is a nice buff on an army with already high Ld, and expanding the Command Protocols aura may be useful. I think the Translocation Protocols could be helpful in blocking off enemy advances or creating chokepoints. If you know you'll be charged, move a Starstele so it'll have to be charged as well, and let 10 T8 wounds soak up some damage.
It'd be more useful however if Translocation was a Strategem rather than an Action however, as you're having to give up a Cryptek to do so.

They can work as good deep strike denier/road block.
One issue though is they aren't exactly small so keeping them all more than 3" from all the terrain AND within 12" of another during deployment can be hard on proper terrain density board.

They have the same issue as all other faction terrain elements.
Too big.
Even the sister's one never gets used, and it is honestly OP cost/rules wise. The rules simply don't allow you to use it. Deploying it at more than 3" from any other terrain element, means that you can't deploy it.

One of our players used them a few times. The problem with the Necron one is less about the size and more about the points cost and the fact that it requires a Cryptek to teleport. Our player tries to set them up around midfield so he can advance his silver tide up behind them, then uses a Cryptek to get one of them into his opponent's deployment zone for line breaker, and to just be generally annoying.
If they were costed more like the DG furnace, I could see this being a really good use for them, but as it is, you're really only taking them because you think they're cool/fun. Still better than some of the others out there imo, but in terms of any kind of even mildly competitive use, the DG fortification is still the only one I would even consider taking.

I have used them several times. I like them. I don't love them.
You get three very durable units for cheap, buuut you need to plan to slingshot them, which means you need two Crypteks nearby turn 1 to do that. The third sits on a backfield objective. Once you launch them they don't do much damage ( admittedly I roll terribly sometimes ), but if you can fit it near their objective you can soften their position there and force them to react.
They might be handy to get protocols to units in their backfield like Ophydians. Haven't tried though.

You can't really claim that as a downside when you're not sure how it'd be a downside in the first place.
How wasting a CP on these things in addition to the pts/$/detachment slot is a downside doesn't seem in doubt.
How I'd get the non-matching faction key words that'd cost me that CP in the 1st place is atm.
I see those as two very different things. I think they pretty clearly went over how it doesn't waste a CP? Or have I missed something again?
Detachments aren't really an issue, either as 3 detachment armies are pretty rare unless you have cheap troops.
They're also aggressively pointed. 120 points for 3 T8 W10 3+ models and it tosses out a couple damage 3 shots now and then? People spend 40 points on murder-buckets to hold objectives ( and do actions ). These can't do actions, but their individual footprint isn't massive and if you can get them in your opponent's DZ for linebreaker they're scoring 4 points a turn and requiring their attention to kill T8 models that heal ( and they grant their own protocols so Szarekan can double heal them for a couple turns as well ).
The problem is needing two crypteks to spend an action to move them, which is painful.

Yes you missed something. But it's in the idle musings category.
In theory it could cost a CP.
Command Benefits: +1 Command point if every unit in this Detachment is from the same Faction and that Faction is the same as your WARLORD’s Detachment
IF you could somehow get the Fortification detachment to have a different faction KW than your Warlord. Or you could get a 2nd or 3ed unit into it that doesn't have the same faction KW as the Dominion. Then you'd pay that CP. But Like I said, I don't know how I'd manage to do that. Might be a thing in the future?
So yeah, currently the CP cost is effectively zero.

Fortification Network detachment is weird, and could use a re-think.
The issue is that any army that's got bespoke terrain only has one piece of it, and seldom is there any point in deploying multiples of the same terrain piece.
HOWEVER many of the unaligned fortifications ARE useful to have, but putting one in the detachment with your bespoke stuff would cost you that CP. Now I'm pretty sure that unaligned stuff doesn't have to be put into detachments, so it might be moot.
Another example that would see you pay CP: let's say you LOVE papa Nurgle. You might have a DG detachment and a Daemons of Nurgle detachment. And maybe you want a furnace AND a tree, because you love Nurgle that much. Well, you're paying for your Fortification Network, because your warlord would either be DG or Daemons, not both.
Has anyone checked out the Tactical Deployment Mission Pack? It might answer some of these questions; I was curious about whether or not it would be a good resource for our Crusade campaign. Haven't been able to browse a store copy.

@Penitent Jake - I don't have the Daemons book to hand, but in the case of the tree/furnace example, doesn't Nurgle still work as a faction keyword to match a Warlord, in theory?
UNALIGNED Fortifications need the same exception as other UNALIGNED units get when it comes to not breaking detachments, assuming they have the UNALIGNED keyword - having said that, where are the profiles of things like the Bastion these days? They're not in the mini-rulebook.

It might... Nurgle and I have to be careful... Slaanesh is the jealous type, so I'm always careful how much I read and learn about the other Gods. I don't know much about Nurgle or DG.
As for where they unaligned fortifications are, I think they're still in an 8th ed CA- not sure which year though.

But that's theoretical problem. You can't take necron fort in non-necron army so it's alwavs free.
It's bunkers etc that have no faction that cost cp.this never does period.
