On the lower left of the Landraider's exhaust armour, there's a little plate held on by two rivets.
It seems like the kind of nameplate you might see on a spacemarine sergeant or officer's pauldron.
Whose name though? Seems like a weird place to put the Landraider's name or the name of its officer. Might be the engineer who oversaw the engines construction/maintenance?
This is keeping me from getting work done

It might specifically be for the name of the _engine's_ machine spirit. [Or what we'd call a model number, for easy reference to its service schedule].
If you're just working on the engine, you don't want to wander around the entire vehicle looking for the designation.

It's for the machine spirit's [ex-]boyfriend.

I don't think nobody in the Games Workshop never thought about that.
Anyway, due to its position, which is easily readable, it could be its serial number, the name of its spirit machine or something like that.

Engines in the real world have makers' plates. It could be the name of the Magos, Forge Master etc., or forge, which produced it.
Alternatively it might literally be the Landraider's name plate.
The power plant on the standard Dreadnought has a similar plate.

Every Space Marine vehicle has a name. That's probably for the name of the vehicle

The Forgeworld of Origin makes sense, probably a little more so than the magos. 'Made in Tie-1'

I assure you they did. Land Raider was designed in the days before computer designed miniatures- there was no 'greeble' or 'more stubbers' button to push. The same guy who set up a small shrine with candles inside the tank and made every 13th tread an eagle (to represent the God Emperor and 12 High lords) thought about why he put a plate on the exhausts.
The powerplant clearly echoes the design language of the dreadnought's, but there was no nameplate on the dread's powerplant at the time.
Maddeningly, the original sketches don't include it

I'm going to third the idea that it's probably a serial plate for the power pack.
It could also be for use as a bridge rating plate, or for having the vehicle's number marked.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

Probably just looking cool / decoration.
Function wise? Probably pattern / model number / ect. There's supposed to be a large amount of variance in Imperial tech, so knowing this land raider is the model which needs the 12mm instead of the 10mm can save you a lot of time when trying to make repairs.
Especially when those repairs are being made while under fire.

The ‘Eavy Metal team seem to have just left it as a bare metal plate on the pictures where a rear view is available on the various versions of the Land Raider. I reckon it has the “Diesel Only” notice to stop Marines ruining the engine at the petrol station.
