Hello.

[size=12] Apologies for another of these threads. Yes, I know
it is something only I can decide. But it's Friday and I am bored.

I have Nids and Drukhari. Have played both of them for donkeys years.

However, I would like to try something a bit different. Somethinga bit more elite, perhaps. Certainly able to take a bit more punishment. Fewer models to paint. A different playstyle would be cool, too.

Currently I am torn between Necron or Imperial Knights.

I really like the Necron models. Different look to the organic or spikey of Dark Eldar or Nids. But potentially a lot of models.

IK would be very different. Not as keen on the models, but they are the complete opposite of DE/Nids and a lot fewer of them.

I would probably add in an AdMech Patrol to help with repairs and ObSec.

So, I am sort of torn.

What are your thoughts on the comparison between IK and Necron both between each other and the armies I have?

Thank you for your thoughts.

Knights are expensive models. You can build a whole army for what you'll put into them.
And in order to win with them you pretty much have to spend even more $$.
So if you aren't keen on the models you're pretty much wasting your $.

Necrons have all kinds of options model-wise & playstyle wise.

For the army I'd build for Chaos Knights it would cost me under $600 at full retail ( 1 Despoiler and 10 Dogs ) so probably more like $450 all in. It's a cheap army, really.

It just won't be easy to win with until they get some better obsec rules and secondaries that play well for them.

The number of Necron box sets available right now is crazy, so there's a lot of discount available, especially if you know someone who wants the Marine half or you don't mind selling it on ebay or whatever.

It's raining Crons right now. They also already have their 9th dex (though IK likely are up soon).

On the minus side: Necron hype is beginning its waning phase now: the Pariah Nexus storyline is played out and we're headed into Charadon. If you're the kind of player who likes taking part in the story as its being told, Knights are a better bet. The Freeblade/ Army of Renown stuff might feel really cool for a player starting an army.

It is getting slim. The other problem is all the other kits are out of stock or if they aren't people are scalping them in eBay.

Necrons, they're an actual army.

Necrons.

Strong dex, tons of options and play styles. Lots of new sculpts.

Caveat, I'm not a Knight player But I've heard it can be pretty boring after a while, since you're doing almost the exact same thing with the exact same units nearly every game. They're also in a rough spot right now.

I'd consider a poll.
IK all the way, small army, deadly, fun to play.

I'd recommend necrons only because a lot of people don't enjoy playing against all Knight armies. It's a good way to get yourself labeled TFG just because of the stigma associated with them. It's an army a lot of players feel doesn't belong in 40K at all and is often thought if, right or wrong, the ultimate powergamer/p2w army.

I'd go Necrons, too, but four knights is waaaay more boring than 1 or 2 knights and a bunch of baby knights or some soup.

Desecrator [405]
3 Dogs, AC & Melta [450]
3 Dogs, Spear & Melta [420]
2 Dogs, Spear & Melta [280]

Poxbringer [75]
3x3 Nurglings [198]
3 Flamers [69]
4 Flamers [92]

Secondaries
WWSWF
Linebreaker
Pierce the Veil

Nurglings help keep them from getting an early position and protect lanes from getting too clogged. Flamers and Pox deepstrike.

You won't even engage in the middle of the table unless the outlook is opportunistic. All of your shooting will be focused on the backfield and anti-tank. You don't shoot anything in the middle.

Once you have a protected enclave for the Poxwalker in their backfield drop him and start Pierce the Veil. Flamers will only drop in to exploit them moving off objectives to respond to you or to help protect the Poxwalker.

Your opponent will choose Bring It Down over Titan Slayer, which is fine - most lists will lack the anti-tank needed especially when you refuse to engage them. In fact you will run past the middle. The spear Dogs will aim to support the linebreaker position. As their gun is assault and they move 14" so run and gun them. The desecrator will aim to pin down an dangerous melee units as they pass through. Give it the ignore invuln in melee relic and counts as 10 obsec.

WWSWF is obvious, but they'll only likely score 10 at most as they'll be too occupied with what is in their face to deal with the AC Dogs in your backfield.

In general - do not engage head on. Strike where they are weakest and use superior mobility to make it difficult for them to respond.

Right now is a great time to build Necrons. There's still Indomitus stock around in the UK and split sets on Ebay at still good prices. In addition there's a new Warhammer Magazine coming out (its trailing now) which will have Necrons VS Imperials (marines, Admech and Sisters of Battle) along with a bunch of terrain.

So that will either be a great thing to subscribe too or provide you cheap models provided you can get hold of individual issues through places like Forbidden Planet.

I'd say Necrons are really good to get into right now; there's a lot of affordable stuff around at discount for a good chunk of the core models; there's a new magazine and the range just got a massive overhaul. So yep great time for Necrons

I don't think there's much chance of being labeled TFG for just for playing Knights (and anyone doing that is probably a massive TFG themselves) but they are a massive gatekeeper army that either stomps or gets stomped in return, I know I've played against all Knights or mostly Knights armies on many occasions and just found them to be very unfun to play against and I know a lot of people have had that experience.

Another vote for Necrons here. Mainly because you have already stated you're not a big fan of the Imperial Knight models.

The only reason I see to start a Knight army is to add to (or start) an Imperial or Chaos force. If you already have Nids and Drukhari and you're not planning to expand into Imperium or Chaos then I don't really see the point of getting a force of Knights.

My opinion is partly skewed because I'm one of the people of the opinion that pure Knight armies shouldn't really be part of 40K. For Adeptus Titanicus or Epic it's fine, but I don't think it should have a place in 28mm.

Firstly, thank you folks for your time and advice.

In the end I decided to start an Iyanden Ghost army.

Wasn't considering them but looking at IK size comparison pictures I fell in love with the stompy yellow robots.
