So I'm finally making my first attempt at a proper army roster and I wanted to use only models I actually own as much as I can. I made this as a way to introduce myself to the basic mechanics without getting into heavy vehicle play yet, so it's very melee focused on purpose. I am not entirely familiar yet with all the systems and interactions, so let me know if I made any egregious errors, what you think of it, and any suggestions you might have for improvement.

So, I know sweet gak all about Space Marines; but, how would you play it against this list?

HQ:
Company Commander 35

Elites

Troops
Infantry Squad 55

Infantry Squad 70
Lascannon

Fast Attack

Sentinel Lascannon + HKM 55

Sentinel Heavy Flamer 45

Heavy Support
Leman Russ 165
Battlecannon + HB

Transport
Chimera 75
HF+ML

Assume that I've deployed the sentinels at the front of my deployment zone, one on each flank, with the barebones infantry chimera up at the front as well. The Russ, second infantry squad and officer are sitting back forming a firebase.

Well, as I said in my post this list was intended to help me learn to play the basics without getting into vehicles yet since they introduce a number of extra rules and such. But if I had to run against that list with minimal changes to my own, I would likely remove one Veteran and switch the rest to Combi-melta so the list now looks like this:

++ Patrol Detachment 0CP (Imperium - Adeptus Astartes - Imperial Fists) [29 PL, , 500pts] ++

I would also consider using Gift of the Phalanx to either make the Veteran Sgt's Combi-melta a Master Crafted weapon or give the Assault Intercessor Sgt's HBP Gatebreaker Bolts. Then, I would send the Veteran squad and the Inquisitor up the side of the map the Leeman Russ is on to try and knock out a Sentinel and Leeman Russ, hopefully followed by the enemy Commander and Chimera, while the rest of the team charge up the center to take the brunt of the fire and engage the chump troops, hopefully knocking them out quickly in melee and moving on to the Commander, if he's still standing, followed by the last Sentinel. Of course the whole time for both teams I would have to carefully balance use of cover with forward movement to avoid getting knocked out immediately. The BC is the most scary from afar followed closely by the HKM and LCs, but with some luck and strategy I would only lose one model before engaging in melee on a Patrol sized map by utilizing sight lines and light cover properly. After reaching the enemy, the Veterans and Inquisitor should have a fairly easy time melting through the vehicles and the main team should tear through both squads of basic IG with ease and knock out vehicles fairly quick as well as the Assault Intercessors screen for Pedro and the Ancient.

For the most part however, this list was intended to be run in matches with no Vehicles, so if there were to be vehicles and I had the full range of options open to me I would make a more balanced list with long range AT.

Hey Sgt Silver,
Some thoughts for you if I may?

If you’re a returning player, vehicles in 9th don’t come with any more special rules than any other unit... one of the nicer things about 8-9th is the way vehicles essentially became multi wound, high toughness monsterous creatures from Ed’s gone by...

With that said, avoiding vehicles is viable.... just not really like that.

While I think Von Garrow was a little unreasonable to throw a 4 vehicle list into 500, that is a luxury the guard have available and tbh a number of other factions will play smaller vehicle/s too, might be worth getting a counter lined up for those...

Also, if this is what you’ve got available go nuts! But also if you have the opportunity, try and flesh out your numbers a bit and spend less on single model units, between Kanto and the ancient you spent half your pts in 2 models

Thanks, I do appreciate your thoughts. I have more models now, but even then I had other options. I still don't have any tracked vehicles for SM yet though, just a few Dreadnoughts. The original thought for the list was not that the list wouldn't have vehicles, but that it would be a game without vehicles to learn basic rules, steps/flow, and interactions, but I guess I didn't make that clear in my description. I've learned a lot since then, so I feel confident I could make a casually competitive list now, but this one still seems like fluffy fun. Partly because I like the lore of the Crimson Fists and I had recently gotten an old Captain Cortez model. He was to be used as the Veteran Sgt.

I do feel that immediately building a list with 4 vehicles to directly counter this was a bit excessive though. If I were to make a serious 500pt list now, I would probably swap out Kantor for a generic Lieutenant and nix the Ancient in favor of a Dreadnought with Twin Lascannon and a Tac Squad. Maybe swap the Vets and A. Inters. for Eradicators and a second Tac Squad if the enemy wants to bring 4 vehicles...
