Just getting back into the game after a 10+ year break so I purchased the SM/Necron Elite edition starting box.

I've been playing with my wife and no matter who controls the SM army they win every single game. This is 10+ games at full army strength for both.
We don't have any new codex/large rule book, but are these armies balanced points wise?

General rules we are playing with are only the ones supplied with the boxed set:
Move.
Shoot/advance.
Charge into melee if able.
Charging army attacks first, each turn after that the person's who turn it is attacks second.
Pistols can still shoot while in melee.
Saving attacks are modified by attackers -AP.

I believe these are close point wise and I don't think they are fundamentally unbalanced but I assume the box doesn't contain any of these factions special rules, and playing without these would probably tilt things a bit.

Should get better once you get a hold on the rules & codexes.

I really hope so....these Assault Intercessors alone kill nearly everything on the field each battle.

hmm. It seems like the game ought to come down to whether the necron warriors get a good shooting attack off on the assault intercessors, or whether th destroyers get to charge the intercessors rather than vice-versa. Either could really take a big chunk out of them, and as annoying as those bikes can be I don't think they have it in them to take out all the 'crons.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
If you want to try adding a rule that would probably tip things in favor of the necrons a bit:

All necrons have a rule called Resurrection Protocols. Every turn you roll a number of dice equal to the number of dead necrons in each unit, and if you roll a number of 5+s equal to the Wounds the unit has, one of them gets back up. The necron warriors in particular since they just have one wound and a special rule that they re-roll 1s for that roll tend to bring back a bunch of dudes with it.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Ah would have thought the bikes would have been the issue here considering they are roughly the same deal as the Assault Intercessors but with better shooting and faster

If you need ideas maybe the board can help if you tell us how these games are played ? Is there any kind of "mission" involved or is it a "slay them to the last one" kind of thing ?
Also, are you playing on the cardboard thing play area in the box or are you playing on a bigger area ? With the base terrain only ?
Is there even rules for the terrain in this box ?

Edit : Wait, it's a full rulebook in there (without fluff), isn't it ?
