Considering they absorb the memories of things they eat. Would make everyday living kinda hellish if after eating, you'd get flashbacks of some chicken's life or gak like that.

I thought Space Marines eat Soylent Green, no?

Marines generally eat synthetic, nutrient-dense food stuff (like gruels or gels) because regular food on its own itsn't nutrient-rich enough to sustain them.

Not that they don't eat other stuff, mind you; I can't imagine synthetic gruel would be all that appealing.

^^ This.

They only get the memory and sense impressions if they eat the brain.

They will probably eat Soylens viridiens like the other troops if given it, though.

...by eating mostly vegetables?

To answer the op's question, yeah, probably. The whole concept of "corpse starch" in 40k as a primary food source is brainless grimderp, and the whole idea that it would be impossible for a society advanced enough to preserve human brains and corpses lobotomized to perform all their automated functions wouldn't have come up with a synthetic protein substitute to raising, farming and slaughtering animals is just dumb.

They've got some kinda goop like in the matrix. At some point in the fifteen bazillion hours of hypno-indoctrination the inquisitor dangling the watch says to the space marine "oh and by the way the goop tastes real good to you, it's all you ever want to eat for nutritional purposes" and the marine says "yes ok praise the emperor we love the goop."

I haven't really heard what they eat referenced very much in the lore. I would imagine it varies from Chapter to Chapter. Blood Angels probably eat bloody steak every day.

I think the definition of vegetarian is abstaining from eating meat. If you do not abstain you are not vegetarian, and you can't partially abstain from something.

Its like being pregnant. You can be pregnant, or not pregnant, but you can't be 'mostly' pregnant.
(See also: 'mostly' alive.)

On the other hand, if 'most' marines were vegetarian, I think Marines could be described as 'mostly' vegetarian as a collective.
Maybe?

On Topic: As noted it probably varies. We are also not clear what is in nutrient pastes. It could be plant or fungus based, or vat grown meat, or entirely synthetic chemicals.

No.

Marines can specifically digest just about any organic material.

And this thread is the first time I’ve heard Marines only eat nutrigruel etc. I mean, I’m sure they do eat it, but as their sole/main source of food? That’s entirely new on me.

Of course you can be mostly alive, since you can be mostly dead, and mostly dead means slightly alive:

I think the nutrient paste is kind of their standard rations deal when on deployment. It's probably more like Spam or other tinned foods.

Come on guys. Space Marines are omnivores in the most literal sense. They can eat ANY organic matter. They are basically tyranids when it comes to eating. They have acid spit, that can dissolve almost anything. A separate organ to filter out all but the most deadly toxins. Their stomach can read DNA of what they're eating to gain experience and adapt to the environment.

So generally they eat their dead, the enemy's dead, whole fething trees, toxic sludge, cerimite laced supplements, any and everything that might have nutritional value.

The idea that they would avoid meat to avoid gaining memories is flat out wrong. It's the opposite. Many chapters over indulge in blood drinking and flesh eating as part of their rituals and customs.

A space marine can literally eat anything organic and break it down to energy. This means they are going to eat the most calorie dense foods. Which happen to be animal fats. They can eat wood or rocks in a pinch though if needed.

So after a big battle with the nids space marines regain their energy with a BBQ?? Makes sense, that’s what the nids would do to them (probably not bother with the charcoal)

Mmm chargrilled egg sac

To be serious though, I thought space marines could survive for very long times without eating. I think their bodies are very efficient and those back packs must do something.

You realize tons of plants contain lots of protein, right?

What vegetarian/vegan diet actually lacks is vitamins and micronutrients, but SM are probably engineered to produce these in one of the extra organs just fine (funnily enough, humans actually have genes to make say vitamin C, they were just deactivated by a random mutation long time ago, causing us lots of problems down the line).

....again, you really think, you really actually think that a society like the imperium where it is considered most efficient to replace peoples' biological parts with robot parts and it's such a commonplace thing that it's unusual to see any person without an eyeball replaced with a camera or a limb replaced with a robot arm is going to hold to 2nd millennia notions of masculine food consumption rather than using some ounce of their technological knowhow to engineer synthetic nutrient goop that shaves 30 seconds of chewing out of the day of their super-soldiers and can be grown in a lab rather than requiring them to maintain such unimaginable luxuries as fething FARMLAND?

all because you, a person on the internet, doesn't want to admit that their spacemans don't eat meat?

(I'm not saying vegetarian, because there's no way whatever synthetic organic goop could possibly qualify as a vegetable...)
