So I recently bought the Seraphon Start Collecting box, and I'm REALLY excited to start putting these little dudes together and applying paint! I love the look of them, even knowing they will never look like the box. Also their lore is amazing! Lord Kroak? Love it. Onto my actual questions:

I'm not looking to Meta Chase, but I'm having difficulty learning about what I can and can't put on my models for assembly? some can take clubs, some can take spears, 1 per 10(?) can take a flag thing? I'm hesitant to go by the rules in the box, but they are too small to magnetize, and I want to get them assembled and painted this summer as a hobby project. Can someone point me towards a resource that helps me configure what my guys should be holding for a "legal" force, that isn't the Codex? I am hesitant to buy any books, because the new edition is just around the corner, but I wanna paint some dino people!

Are there websites with good starter list ideas?

(TL;DR) just bought the Seraphon SC box, have no legit rules, never played AOS, attempting to build playable list from box, no idea what to assemble with what options.

Thanks!

If you add a unit entry and it gives you options, then those are the options (seems tautological).

I just plugged in the Saurus Warriors, and I see that they can have Spears or Clubs. So the entire unit must have one or the other.

The rest you have to go by the warscroll. 1 is an Alpha, he's free. 1 is a Icon Bearer. Also free. 1 is also a Wardrummer. Also free.

The basic warscrolls can be downloaded off the GW webstore (e.g., for Saurus Warriors you go to the bottom of the page and under the 'Downloads' tab you will find the unit's warscroll which will tell you what weapons the unit may be armed with):

DESCRIPTION

A unit of Saurus Warriors has any number of models. The unit is armed with one of the following weapon options: Celestite Club and Powerful Jaws; or Celestite Spear and Powerful Jaws.

Right, I don't understand AoS values, is there a statistical difference between the spears or the clubs? What is Rend?

It's obvious I need to read the BRB, but I don't want to buy one with the new edition just in sight.

Rend is equivalent to 40k's AP. It reduces the Save of the enemy model.

Also, the Core rules are completely free and cover this. No BRB needed.
