Here’s a list of the current exhibitors. Looks like all the big companies are sitting this year out. Games Workshop so far is what and see.

It doesn't surprise me. Generally for tradeshows like this companies have to spend half a year just planning to attend so with COVID restrictions just starting to be lifted this month it's just not enough time to get something together--especially for those that tend to have larger floor areas.

I had read that Asmodee and subsidiaries will not be attending but will be doing an online thing instead.

Well, since they seem to have dumped all their CMoN exclusives onto Miniaturemarket.com, why would they waste a trip?

We are expecting things for Legion and X Wing that I know of.

Honestly makes sense. Video Games moved that direction few years ago already, with E3 losing importance as Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft do their own events instead.

True, but video games are a different market and a totally different, almost fully digital product these days; with far less focus on physical releases outside of collectors packs which are short term products.

I do think that big firms sitting this out makes a lot of sense; 2021 has hope, but its also got a lot of questions. Furthermore even if the event can go ahead the various travel restrictions and advice to people will vary a lot and some might not consider it safe or might not be allowed to travel; or might have to spend a lot of time in quarantine. So there's a lot of reasons to not attend big gatherings.

Late 2021 we might see some events get started again; but I'd wager many will be local or regional only events. Big national and international I don't see happening till 2022 and that is assuming that the vaccines and winter 2021 go well with regard to Covid.

GW might still turn up, but it might be local staff rather than staff flying from the UK; they've the option of that whilst most other firms don't have an international workforce; and where they do its often that overseas is purely production not marketing and customer relations positions .

Asmodee doesn't own CMoN.

You're right, but you can demonstrate how a product looks and plays via videocall just as well as in person, and to a much larger audience. physical industry conferences existing in this day and age always seem to me like "this is how it used to be done so we just keep doing it" thing.

Yes and no.

Model games are a tactile thing; they are a hands on thing and there's plenty of models that don't photograph all that well. The Warbringer titan is a good example; get close so that it has size and its top half looks oversized; move back so that you don't have that perspective distortion and the model looks small.

There's plenty of models I've not liked fully until I saw and held them and its much easier to part people with their money at a physical sale of a physical product than when its purely digital. You can certainly do a lot online, but its not the whole story. Sure most of your market won't make it to a convention; but a good number of reps, marketers, influencers, local super keen people and such will - they will be the ambassadors going back to their local communities. All enthusiastic about what they saw and willing to engage with.

Video games can have the same impact, but as the product itself is often fully online; you can get around it more easily with a few skype/zoom webchats and demos and such to have outreach. Then have big online video conferences, interviews and such for the mass market.

Asmodee doesn't own CMoN.

No but they do the distribution for them (edit:well north America anyway) since CMON pulled out of that aspect of the business and closed down their warehouse (and sold all remaining stock in it to miniature market)

No surpassing really.
Government big wigs are flip flopping on travel restriction on daily basis so nobody can plan anything.

It's a battle of doctors and economists. Sane medical advice would be to not allow populations to travel and mingle during a pandemic - economies however really need the money in some countries/regions which rely very heavily upon it. Esp in poorer nations where they might not have the social setup and financial reserves to just issue furlough payments and such.

I agree.
But at some point we have to decide that If we cannot rely on vacines we just gotta deal with it and get on with life and keep looking into an alternative.
You going to have more deaths from general poverty, suicides and alcohol then covid before long.

Im getting my vaccine tomorrow. I get tested twice a week from work... Why should I not be allowed to see my grandma whom I might not be able to see ever again if I miss this chance? Its crazy..

GW did pretty good with people from the Memphis Battle Bunker when the UK staff was denied entry into the US because they had the wrong visas the one year. They used to fly in staff from Warhammer World to work the booth, but the last two years has been mostly people from the Cafe.

The miniature painting area will be closed this year. No word yet on the painting competition but I am guessing that is out as well with several of the sponsors not coming this year.

From the FB page:

[spoiler][i]Update: FYI there will not be an MHE Paint and Take nor Speed Painting this year. We feel that there needs to be more time before we fully go back to pre-covid life with a large amount of people.
There will still be miniature painting classes via GenCon Online and there may be some artists that will still come in person to do classes. We will keep you updated on that. Registration for the instructors has not opened yet.
There will still be the Aces of Painting event via online on the GenCon Twitch Channel. We will keep you updated on that as well. The Aces pieces from last year and this year will be auctioned at GenCon 2022 from what we were last told. If that changes, we will let you know of course
