Question for all you tournament goers out there. I have a handful of Kustom Mek Gunz that I like to bring to games, they are the standard Mek gun mixed with Trukk bitz, roughly the same size and roughly the same look. Would you complain if I brought these out to an ITC event? I ask because the last time I went I (luckily) didn't bring any kustom models but a fellow ork player did in fact bring some kustom models, notably a really well done trio of Deff dreadz that were mixed with a bunch of different walkers to make some seriously cool looking models (wish I had taken some pictures) A Harlequins player got very upset that they weren't the exact model and complained to the TOs who gathered and ruled in favor of the Ork player since they were 50/50 actual deff dreadz but with some rather significant modifications. I don't really feel like getting into an argument at a tournament over whether I can bring out my plastic army men so i'm just feeling out the community, I've honestly not seen this before in years of gaming but i'm more than willing to accept that my experience might have been the exception not the rule.

I am 100% for conversions, ESPECIALLY in an Ork army.

The short answer is get them cleared ahead of time with the TO if you have any worries; any good TO will be happy to make a call on it ahead of time and then there are no possible issues because if anyone complains you get to just say "sorry mate, the TO said it was fine" and that's that.

That said, almost nobody will care as long as they're obviously done because you think it's cool, not for advantage, and as long as they're basically the same size. If you are really worried, you could build one normal mek gun that is 100% stock that you can offer to swap in for LOS checks if it makes your opponent happy, but that creates issues of its own that usually make it not worth trying.

Kustom model about orks? In my opinion an ork army shouldn't have two identical models, especially when it comes to vehicles.

As long as dimensions are the same and there's no confusion about what is what, conversions are not only ok, but highly recommended.

Some original but OOP models have completely different dimensions than their current counterparts (think about the ork trukk), and sometimes also have different weapons, but they're still 100% GW. Scratch built, converted, kitbashed models could be closer to the appropriate size and with the appropriate wargear.

TO use house rules, their house rules. It's impossible to say what are they going to allow or not without asking.

It's also worth noting that some people will start arguing against non-standard models if they feel like it gets them and advantage. When prices are on the line, sportsmanship often gets left behind.

Almost all TOs will allow you to send in pictures and legitimize your models that way ahead of time, some even require you to do it.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

In general most people within the hobby love seeing conversions. For a competitive game event (tournament or just serious casual game) most will expect:

1) That your conversions across your army are easily distinguished from each other. Ergo you've not converted your army to all look the same to make it hard to track different units

2) That your conversions are within the general size limits of the original model. Ergo that you've not made your tank the side of a buliding to use as a mobile cover; or made your troops all super stealth and hardly raised off the base etc....

3) That they are on the right base size - this is somewhat tricky for 40K because GW hasn't published a guide for it and multiple models often have different bases depending on what set they come in or what age they are. So this one can be a bit trickier.

4) Are well done. If you turn up with a "Tub-O-Plastic Soldiers" chances are you won't be allowed. There is certainly a quality leeway and well done stuff has more chance of being accepted

5) At Official GW events and GW sponsored events models will generally be required to be majority original parts of the model or at least GW model parts. This is one of those highly variable things and again some store managers might not care and some might be fully to the letter.

As others said, get them cleared before the event with the TO. If you can't then take official models as back ups incase you do get refused.

Most gamers are accepting and indeed encouraging of conversions. It's a big part of the hobby and at many points in the past some models were impossible to field without conversions because GW didn't make nor sell them.

Of course you will get some who will get a bit shirty about it. Sometimes they might have legitimate concern; sometimes they might be trying to waste time to their advantage during the match; sometimes they might just be people who don't deal well with environmental change and such and thus the "Wrong model" bother them unduly more than normal.

Personally I wouldn't let any of that stop me - if the TO says its good; its good.
