I especially like to play the skirmish versions of both Grimdark Future and Age of Fantasy, and I am really intending some day to use their starship game to get my Star Wars Armada minis on the table.

I will probably try to use Warstuff (one of their "One Off" games) with Lego minifigures to get my son into gaming.

Quite well. It's a rules-lite and free way to play some games with (primarily) 40K and Mantic Warpath/Deadzone figures.

Currently the 2.5 lists are just about to be released, so they are not listed on the site as the "official" up to date army lists, yet.

2.5 most drastically affects armies with 2+ Defense troops, like Battle Brothers and their variants, but most of the rest of the update is small tweaks.

Instead of using the Army Books link, go lower to the Webapp(Beta) link. It leads you to the new stuff where each army has two buttons, one for a standard PDF army list, and one for the army builder app.

I find that even in the situations where it's just as deadly as 40K, the alternating activation mechanic makes it feel FAR different than watching someone systematically delete your newly-deployed army on their first turn, with nothing that you can do about it.

I have yet to play any full games of AoF or GDF, I have been more into the skirmish versions of each game, which ALSO have quite nice campaign rules that enable the kind of model growth between games that I liked about old games like Mordheim/Necromunda back in the late 90's.

I'm actually going to be using Warstuff from the One-Off games section of OPR to get my 7yo son into wargaming, and I'm REALLY looking forward to getting anyone I know to play a few games of Warfleets: FTL with me. Dad never liked the mechanics of the card interplay of Star Wars Armada, but FTL might be a new and more accessible way to use all my Armada ships, and there's even some additional rules to add in some of the elements of Armada to the core game.

Pretty much. Every edition of 40k has always been a combination of a solid core game, with an ever-increasing pile of add-ons that eventually contradict each other.

Even if the opposition has AP weapons (which can admittedly be nasty against forces with a bad defense), remember they still have to take a -1 To Hit penalty if you are in cover, unless they are using a weapon with [Blast].
