Subject: Chernobyl, the gift that keeps on giving...
Matt Swain wrote: The thing about chernobyl and other sites like it that makes me feel a little uneasy is that if a radioactive hellpit can create a new strain of fungus and mushrooms that can survive and even thrive in an area that would kill a human being in a matter of minutes, what else could they produce?
There are plenty of places with relatively high levels of background radiation due to natural deposits of uranium or other radioactive ores. Maybe not to ground zero Chernobyl levels, but they've been around for millions of years.
Those situations produce exactly the same thing as other extreme conditions - stuff that can survive in those conditions.
If you want to worry about stuff, the repeated Ebola outbreaks in the past decade are far, far, far more worrying than anything that might come out of Chernobyl.
Or the nails bacteria developing due to humans persistent abuse of anti biotics, especially those of the sexual variety.
