Hi everyone,

I was introduced to Warhammer 40k in 1999 and sort of half-collected and painted (or butchered) a few minis as a kid, and then just resigned to keeping up with the lore.

I recently had a desire to learn to paint minis properly, and I found some 2005ish (I think) new in box space marines in a cupboard. 2 tactical squads and an assault squad, which I plan to paint then see where I go.

It would be nice to use this as a springboard to get back into the game after such a long hiatus, but I want to see if I enjoy painting and modelling before I commit to buying rulebooks etc. With that in mind, what are my options for building out 2 tactical squads and an assault squad? I see a lot of options on the sprue, and from what little I remember of 3rd and 4th edition rules you can't use all of the cool stuff in one squad. I also know there will be some more stuff I'd need to buy to make a minimum viable army, but I don't know exactly what. Everything has changed since I last even glanced at some rules

If I should move my questions out to the relevant section please let me know

Welcome to dakka! As to your question, then yes, it would be better to move them to the relevant section/s simply because there you will get your answers faster, and more thorough

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Hi and welcome to Dakka!

For your question about loadouts it depends on the army and the edition.

I have Space Wolves for example and our Tactical Marine equivalents mean we can have up to one special weapon for every 5 person, so I would often run two Flamers in a Squad of 10, oh, and there are no more pie plate or flamer templates nowadays.
